Chapter 11-Lecture Notes
I.
Jihadist Networks
Jihadi Salafism:
Jihadi Salafism (also referred to as Salafi Jihadism, Salafism, Salafists, or Salafis), a medieval interpretation of Islam that developed when Arabs were being threatened by Europeans. Jihadi Salafism represents a minority and frequently internally condemned interpretation of Islam, but it is a distinct theological strain of Sunni Islam supported by a global network of scholars, websites, media outlets, and social networks. Bunzel says it is deeply rooted in a theology of militancy. The Muslim Brotherhood champions one school. It formed in Egypt to oppose European imperial rule, to purify religion through education and social service, and to seek the restoration of the caliphate at some distant point in history. A more violent school, represented by ISIS and al Qaeda, seeks to purify Islam and rid Muslim lands of Western influence. ISIS embraces a more extreme intolerant version of Salafism seeking to purge the religion of what it believes are un-Islamic practices, eradicating Shi’ites, and waging offensive wars. Salafis see themselves as the only “true” Muslims, and they have assumed the authority to denounce fellow Muslims “heretics” if they disagree with Jihadi Salafi theology. William McCants (2014a) adds that Jihadi Salafism includes an apocalyptic interpretation of Islam that believes Salafis are called to usher in the final days of creation.
Muslim Brotherhood:
An organization founded by Hassan al Banna in 1928 to recapture the spirit and religious purity of the period of Mohammed and the four Rightly Guided caliphs. The Brotherhood seeks to create a single Muslim nation through education and religious reform. A militant wing founded by Sayyid Qutb sought the same objective through violence. Hamas, a group that defines itself as the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, has rejected the multinational approach in favor of creating a Muslim Palestine.
Al Qaeda:
Al Qaeda from Inception to 9/11 Al Qaeda’s origins can be traced to the Cold War. From 1945 until 1991, the United States and former Soviet Union fought one another with surrogates to avoid a direct superpower nuclear confrontation. Islamic radicals hated Communists for their atheism, and thi.

Introduction Why We Disagree about International Relations
In April, 2015, ISIS militants pose with their banner in a suburb of Damascus, Syria, that they had just partially captured. What has caused the rise of ISIS, and what can be done to counter it?

In spring 2014, an Islamic army known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) swarmed across northern Syria and Iraq conquering territory larger than Belgium, including Iraq’s second largest city of Mosul. Also known as the Islamic State (IS), Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and Daesh, its Arab label, ISIS declared itself a Caliphate, resurrecting the ancient empire of Islam, and proceeded to threaten Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. Thousands of jihadists (religious revolutionaries) joined ISIS, some from the United States; and scattered extremist groups from North Africa to Southeast Asia pledged allegiance to ISIS and adopted its black flag. The Caliphate, under its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, imposed a brutal Sunni Muslim law in the conquered territories, and hooded warriors beheaded Western journalists, local Christians and Shiite (non-Sunni) Muslims, captured in terrifying videos that went viral on the Internet. Ben Rhodes, the Deputy National Security Adviser to President Obama, identified the threat to the United States: “They are seeking to establish themselves as the vanguard terrorist organization that is at war with the U.S. and the West on behalf of Islam.”1
What causes a conflict of this sort? And what can be done about it? As students of international relations, we start with the facts, but we have to be careful. There are so many facts, and we can’t know them all or know for certain which ones may be the most important ones that cause other things to happen. Let’s look at what appear to be the salient facts in the case of ISIS and then make a first stab at how we sort out the facts and causes of international events to understand them better.
Syria and Iraq are centrally located in the geographically strategic region of the Middle East. They are Muslim countries that border the Mediterranean Sea, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Turkey. Both Eastern and Western empires have occupied this region. Christian crusaders invaded in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and the region was part of the Ottoman Empire for several centuries. The first Muslim Caliphate dated from the thirteenth century. After World War I and the collapse of the Caliphate, Syria became a colonial territory under French administration, while Iraq became a British colony. Both became independent nations after World War II. After World War II, oil became a major resource in the Middle East. Western companies monopolized oil production and remain today major economic players in the region even though the oil-producing states now control their own oil and influence global oil markets through the Organization of Petroleum .
Witnessing to Muslims using the Any3 method, or that advocated by such evangelists as Bachman, and the problems with the CAMEL method. Contrast of Islamic beliefs with the Bible and truth.
The Islamic and Christian prophecies of last things are in many ways similar, but come to radically different conclusions as to the identity of the main players, especially the Madhi, Isa, and al Dajjal.
There are incompatibilities between Islam and Christianity in the Qur'an (Koran) and Bible. We study the theological problems, the underlying philosophy, and support for Biblical truth
This is a summary largely taken from a book called Faith That Endures. The author has done more than document persecution. He explores the causes of persecution, their manifestations, and how to help rather than aggravate persecution. His book is very important and revealing
Attempts to compromise by using the Muslim friendly Bible and for the Muslim convert to stay within the umma, performing the salat, zakat, Hajj, etc. The Muslim convert is thus cut off from the benefits of the Christian church fellowship
Modern approaches to Muslim evangelism include the so called Insider Movement and Common Ground. Both compromise the truth of Christian faith in an attempt to win over Muslim converts. My contention is that one must trust Biblical truth, stand firm in the faith and present the gospel in a clear form to Muslims. Contextualization is fine to make a subject understandable, but the truth of the message must never be compromised. This compromise distorts the faith, undermines the position of true converts, and deprives Muslim converts to Christianity of the truths they need to experience the power of the truly committed Christian life.
This section and the following are largely adapted from Roland Muller's text on reaching the Muslim community through the messenger, message, and community. Each area is briefly outlined.
Folk religion deals with evil spirits often with a shaman, etc. All major religions, including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism have both a formal traditional religion and also some form of folk religion. This outlines some of the folk religion found in a variety of places among the more than 1,000,000,000 Muslims.
The Qur'an and Bible agree in many places, but also directly conflict. Islam uses the law of abrogation to handle places where the Qur'an changes from one position to another. The Qur'an also denies the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ, the deity of Christ, the rellationship between God the Father and the Son, and the trinity, all of which are vital to the Christian faith.
The Muslim family is strong, as is the umma, or Muslim community. Such characteristics as loyalty, honor, avoiding shame, hospitality, and the relationship of man and women are key. One's identity is tied to the family group. In addition to the father, the eldest son has great responsablity. Women's chastity is vital for family honor.
The five pillars of Islam are mandatory for every serious Muslim. They include the shahada (creed), the salat (prayers), zakat (alms), Ramadan (the fast), and the Hajj (trip once in a lifetime to Mecca). Here is a brief explanation of teh Islamic five pillars

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

Higher reward – fight with possessions,
wealth, lives
01/22/16 Islamic Terrorism 21
22. What helped ISIS succeed
Saddam Hussein removed, replaced by
weak Shi’a government, a client of
Shiite Iran
Sunni Iraqi resentment of Shi’a
government
Arab Spring with pro-Sharia revolts
putting Islamic governments using
democracy as a temporary means
01/22/16 Islamic Terrorism 22

make legal judgments. Upright, or the
least corrupt available
01/22/16 Islamic Terrorism 31
32. Caliphate
Goal – total submission to Allah in all areas
of life
Terrorism is justified because the Muslims
have been vilified and humiliated, Allah &
Muhammad insulted
Call for Muslims hijira to come to ISIS,
especially professionals
The land is for all Muslims.

35. ISIS spells out their plans
Defeat Saudi Arabia & Iran
Europe – weak and oppressed. Presents
Muslims as oppressed
Multiculturalism helps the movement

kept a low profile, and their children made
lots of money
Third generation will attack
01/22/16 Islamic Terrorism 35
36. ISIS plans
ISIS fighters may return to Europe
trained and battle-hardened
They expect the political left to join up
with Muslims

make bombs and Molotov cocktails
01/22/16 Islamic Terrorism 36
37. ISIS schedule
Attack Arabia first – victory
Attack Iran next
Then attack Rome, who will land in al-
A’maq or Dabiq

International Airport. Then Isa will
come from heaven against al-Dajjal
01/22/16 Islamic Terrorism 38
39. Warfare in USA
Live a double life, and use subterfuge
Do not live openly like a devout Muslim
Use western nicknames
Steal (often legally) from non-Muslim
Maybe use toy guns initially for target
practice
01/22/16 Islamic Terrorism 39
40. An ideological battle
Permanent military victory may be
difficult
It is an ideological battle of death
versus life
Many Muslims in Iran are turning away
from Islam as they see ISIS and realize
that this is actually what Islam teaches
01/22/16 Islamic Terrorism 40
41. Cruelty is used as a recruiting
tool
Cruelty models Muhammad’s treatment
of apostates and those opposing his
rule – beheadings, burning out eyes,
putting fire on chest, chopping of hands
and opposite feet, leaving to die of
thirst, assassinations are all
documented in the Qur’an or Hadith
01/22/16 Islamic Terrorism 41
42. Cruelty is used as a recruiting
tool
Cruelty is designed to prove that ISIS is
true Islam – carrying out punishments of
Shari’a
Cruelty turns off some, but recruits
others
Cruelty mades the “kuffers” or “kafirs”
(unbelievers) fear
01/22/16 Islamic Terrorism 42
