This study has surveyed current trends and issues in English language
education in Asia, that is, 16 nations including Hong Kong and Taiwan
(total 18 regions). The results of the survey reveal commonalities and
diversity across Asian regions in the following aspects: the starting
grade, class hours, national curriculum, textbooks, the medium of
instruction, the use of computer, university entrance examination,
teachers, tertiary English education, and problems and concerns. English
language education in each Asian nation/region seems an outcome of
diverse factors including political environment, social and individual
needs, and resources (e.g., teachers and computer). The findings from
the survey raise five key issues to be resolved: the amount of time
allotted for English language education; the use of English as the
medium of instruction; centralization or decentralization; teachers; and
the nation-wide university entrance examination.
Learning to learn cooperatively
Cooperative learning is a type of instruction where students work together in small groups to achieve a common goal. There are five key features of successful cooperative learning: students learn they rely on each other; students are accountable as individuals and as a group; students support each other through interactions; students develop social skills through cooperation; and students reflect on their effectiveness. This study has surveyed current trends and issues in English language
education in Asia, that is, 16 nations including Hong Kong and Taiwan
(total 18 regions). The results of the survey reveal commonalities and
diversity across Asian regions in the following aspects: the starting
grade, class hours, national curriculum, textbooks, the medium of
instruction, the use of computer, university entrance examination,
teachers, tertiary English education, and problems and concerns. English
language education in each Asian nation/region seems an outcome of
diverse factors including political environment, social and individual
needs, and resources (e.g., teachers and computer). The findings from
the survey raise five key issues to be resolved: the amount of time
allotted for English language education; the use of English as the
medium of instruction; centralization or decentralization; teachers; and
the nation-wide university entrance examination.
Learning to learn cooperatively
Cooperative learning is a type of instruction where students work together in small groups to achieve a common goal. There are five key features of successful cooperative learning: students learn they rely on each other; students are accountable as individuals and as a group; students support each other through interactions; students develop social skills through cooperation; and students reflect on their effectiveness. The document provides suggestions for implementing cooperative learning such as establishing group roles and norms, balancing student status, and providing demanding tasks that require cooperation.

The preschoolers in Ms. Mimi’s classroom are very busy throughout the day, work-
ing on emerging pretend-play skills, turn taking, conflict management, phonologi-
cal awareness, math knowledge, and other academic, behavioral, and social skills.
Ms. Mimi knows that young children’s readiness for school comes with increased
expectations for academic skills, but she worries that her preschoolers are not get-
ting enough experience with social skill building. When her supervisor comes for a
visit, Ms. Mimi shares her concern that she may not be meeting her preschoolers’
social needs. She says, “Some days I find myself worrying so much about teach-
ing literacy, numeracy, and all the other academic skills that I wonder if the children
have enough opportunities to learn how to get along with each other.”

Treatment involves pharmacological interventions like mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, and antidepressants as well as therapy. Proper diagnosis and treatment can help minimize the impact of this severe condition, but it remains a challenging illness due to its fluid nature and lifelong duration.
