Facts: What to avoid? What
works? When teaching and
presenting to high school
teens residing in an urban
community.
What Works
 Remove barriers: put cell phones on table/away
 Speak with language at an 8th
grade level
 Utilize humor
 Have a sense of strong leadership
 Be sensitive to cultural competence
 Interaction (Incorporate activities or reactions from
students)
 Display strong interpersonal skills
 Be motivating
 Use bright colors
 Insert interesting pictures and/or videos
 Be active/engaging and move around the room
 Allow teens to integrate their opinion and let their
voice be heard
 Allow time for questions
