New Directions in Targeted Therapeutic Approaches for Older Adults With Mantl...i3 Health
i3 Health is pleased to make the speaker slides from this activity available for use as a non-accredited self-study or teaching resource.
This slide deck presented by Dr. Kami Maddocks, Professor-Clinical in the Division of Hematology and
Associate Division Director for Ambulatory Operations
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide insight into new directions in targeted therapeutic approaches for older adults with mantle cell lymphoma.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounting for 5% to 7% of all lymphomas. Its prognosis ranges from indolent disease that does not require treatment for years to very aggressive disease, which is associated with poor survival (Silkenstedt et al, 2021). Typically, MCL is diagnosed at advanced stage and in older patients who cannot tolerate intensive therapy (NCCN, 2022). Although recent advances have slightly increased remission rates, recurrence and relapse remain very common, leading to a median overall survival between 3 and 6 years (LLS, 2021). Though there are several effective options, progress is still needed towards establishing an accepted frontline approach for MCL (Castellino et al, 2022). Treatment selection and management of MCL are complicated by the heterogeneity of prognosis, advanced age and comorbidities of patients, and lack of an established standard approach for treatment, making it vital that clinicians be familiar with the latest research and advances in this area. In this activity chaired by Michael Wang, MD, Professor in the Department of Lymphoma & Myeloma at MD Anderson Cancer Center, expert faculty will discuss prognostic factors informing treatment, the promising results of recent trials in new therapeutic approaches, and the implications of treatment resistance in therapeutic selection for MCL.
Target Audience
Hematology/oncology fellows, attending faculty, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL).
Learning Objectives
1.) Identify clinical and biological prognostic factors that can guide treatment decision making for older adults with MCL
2.) Evaluate emerging data on targeted therapeutic approaches for treatment-naive and relapsed/refractory MCL and their applicability to older adults
3.) Assess mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapies for MCL and their implications for treatment selection

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.
Stay informed, stay safe, and get your flu shot today!

The prostate is an exocrine gland of the male mammalian reproductive system
It is a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system and is located in front of the rectum and just below the urinary bladder
Function is to store and secrete a clear, slightly alkaline fluid that constitutes 10-30% of the volume of the seminal fluid that along with the spermatozoa, constitutes semen
A healthy human prostate measures (4cm-vertical, by 3cm-horizontal, 2cm ant-post ).
It surrounds the urethra just below the urinary bladder. It has anterior, median, posterior and two lateral lobes
It’s work is regulated by androgens which are responsible for male sex characteristics
Generalised disease of the prostate due to hormonal derangement which leads to non malignant enlargement of the gland (increase in the number of epithelial cells and stromal tissue)to cause compression of the urethra leading to symptoms (LUTS

2. 1.Thailand features internationally
accredited medical facilities
Hospitals and other medical facilities in Thailand pride themselves on
their high standards, and many have subjected their premises and
systems to the most rigorous classification by applying for accredita-
tion and certification whereby a qualified standards organization -
distinct from the health care organization under review - assesses the
hospital or facility to determine if it meets a set of standards and
requirements designed to improve the quality of patient care. This
voluntary process provides a tangible and visible commitment by the
hospital to continually ensure a safe environment for its patients and
staff.
Furthermore, with recovery possible within easy access to some of
the most delightful vacation spots in the world, this combination of
first-class standards coupled to the finest standards of rest and relax-
ation guarantee that once you have chosen to have your treatment in
Thailand, you are indeed in good hands.

Medical Standards
Thailand has deservedly earned an international reputation as one of
the leading destinations for first-class medical care and clinical pro-
cedures. Patients from around the world enjoy impeccable levels of
care and medical treatment in state-of-the-art hospitals certified to
the most exacting standards.
These hospitals are the envy of the world in many cases, staffed as
they are by doctors and surgeons qualified to the highest academic
and professional standards with some leaders in their chosen spe-
cializations.
3. Coverage from patient entry to discharge, assessing the quality
of patient care from the time a patient enters a facility to dis-
charge and utilizing this data to plan and implement changes
that create optimal care.
Assessment for all aspects of management to bring efficiency
and best practices to all phases of management, from clarity of
leadership’s responsibility and accountability to critical facility
management.
Two Levels of Compliance – Measurement of performance
against both the core requirements needed to achieve accredi-
tation and additional standards that lead organizational best
practice levels.
Creation of a culture of patient safety, implementing standards
that focus on patient safety and risk reduction in clinical pro-
cesses.

JCI standards have proven their value in public
and private organizations of all sizes in Europe,
South America, Asia, and the Middle East.
They ensure:
Thailand was the first country in Asia to achieve JCI accreditation in
2002, and 13 hospitals are now accredited:
• Bangkok Hospital Medical Center
• Bangkok Heart Hospital
• Bangkok Hospital Pattaya
• Bangkok Hospital Phuket
• BNH Hospital
• Bumrungrad International
• Chiangmai Ram Hospital
• Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital
• Samitivej Sriracha Hospital
• Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital
• Synphaet General Hospital
• Wattanosoth Cancer Hospital
• Vejthani Hospital
Moreover, JCI sets Clinical Care Program Certification standards
(CCPC), which are awarded to institutions demonstrating excellence
in fostering better outcomes in specific clinical care services or treat-
ment of specific diseases and conditions. Four Thai hospitals have
received CCPC certificates:
Moreover, many Thai hospitals use Hospital Accreditation (HA), a
four-stage process that combines self-assessment and peer assess-
ment to judge performance levels against established standards and
identify methods of improvement.
Bangkok Hospital Medical Center (acute coronary syndrome,
breast cancer conserving therapy, heart failure, primary stroke)
Bumrungrad International (primary stroke, acute myocardial
infarction with ST segment elevation)
Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital (low back pain, primary stroke)
Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital (lung cancer, acute myocardial
infarction, knee osteoarthritis)

4. Not only do Thailand’s leading medical facilities achieve the highest
international standards, but so do the individuals who work in them.
The physicians, surgeons and nurses have been meticulously
trained to the highest levels, while many specialists have been con-
ducting researches and gaining experiences at the world’s best
medical institutes with some even leading the field in which they
specialise.
Many Thai doctors and surgeons practicing today have won awards
for their work and endeavors and more than 500 doctors practicing
in Thai hospitals are American Board Certified.
These medical professionals are skilled at providing the highest
quality medical treatment.
2.Thailand’s medical professionals
are highly qualified
All of Thailand’s leading hospitals feature state-of-the-art techno-
logy that helps them provide the highest degree of medical treatment
and service. Technology equipment includes:
3.Thailand’s medical technology is
state-of-the-art
Siemens Biograph 64 PET/CT, which is superior to other CT
and MRI machines in early cancer detection and diagnosis.
Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), which is the most accurate
method for targeting radiation to cancerous tumors, and R2
CAD ImageChecker that has 6-20% higher breast cancer
detection rates than standard CAD digital mammography,
allowing more accurate early detection and reducing the inci-
dences of false positives.

5. Moreover, many hospitals make use of fully automated drug ma-
nagement systems, picture archiving and communication systems
to ensure that administration and communication are as seamless
as the treatments themselves.
Novalis Shaped Beam Surgery System for non-invasive stereo-
tactic radiosurgery and stereotactic radiotherapy to destroy dis-
eased tissue or cauterize a problem area without affecting
healthy adjacent tissue.
4D Ultrasound operating at a speed of 25 volumes per second.
MRI - Intera Achieva 3.0T MRI, which yields the information nec-
essary to discover blood circulation abnormalities and is par-
ticularly useful in the early detection of brain cancer.
IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy), which is an innovative
cancer treatment that utilizes ionizing radiation in the treatment
of malignant tumors.
Picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) that
enables images such as x-rays and scans to be stored elec-
tronically, so that doctors and radiologists can access an image
and compare it with previous images from anywhere in the hos-
pital.

•
Blood Marrow Stem Cell Transplant, a complex medical treat-
ment program that can offer a cure for many otherwise incurable
blood or bone marrow diseases and certain cancers in adults
and children.
Gamma Knife Surgery, which allows for non-invasive brain sur-
gery using highly targeted gamma radiation.
The da Vinci Surgical System, which uses robotics to translate a
surgeon’s natural hand movements to apply less invasive inci-
sions with unprecedented precision during heart surgery.
256-slice Multi-detector CT Scan, which is faster and yields far
higher resolution images than other CT Scanners.
CARTO SOUND Module for identifying and treating arrhythmias
with unprecedented precision and confidence.

6. 4.Thailand
offers excellent service
Thais are proud that their national character has won them a well-
deserved reputation for their compassion and warm hospitality, and
that’s why the country is nicknamed “The Land of Smiles”. Patients
become so much at ease that they feel almost like a guest on holiday
from the moment they arrive at the hospital.
The level of service excellence is virtually unprecedented in the world
and many patients and visitors are pleasantly surprised to find hospi-
tals in Thailand with excellent restaurants, coffee shops and person-
alized room service not seen or experienced anywhere else in the
world. The hospitals themselves offer facilities found usually only in
5-star hotels, and patients from anywhere in the world can enjoy
immaculate private rooms, translation services, room service includ-
ing Halal prepared cuisine and access to prayer facilities of their
chosen faith.
All patients can enjoy healthcare and nursing of the highest stan-
dards - standards actually set by some Thai hospitals over the years
- and Thai nurses, physicians, surgeons and therapists never forget
the most fundamental element in a complete treatment and swift
recovery: namely, a warm and caring human touch. Staff are truly
friendly and considerate to the needs of all their patients, and they
will do everything to make you feel relaxed and confident in the treat-
ments you have selected, ensuring all your needs are met.
Thailand hospitals feature 24-hour nursing care, and staff are experi-
enced in assisting foreign patients, with more than 30 hospitals em-
ploying specialized English speaking staff and many providing trans-
lators in a wide variety of foreign languages, including Arabic, Ben-
gali, French, German, Korean, Mandarin, Chinese, Vietnamese and
Japanese.
Our guarantee in Thailand’s hospitals
You are always in good hands
Only in Thailand, patients can also opt for recovery from their treat-
ment outside of the hospital, and in accommodating this require-
ment to combine treatment with a vacation, the hospital can provide
a medical escort service wherever the patient chooses to vacation,
ensuring expert, qualified and comprehensive medical care and
attention while recovering by the beach or in the mountains of Thai-
land.
