This document summarizes the student's 6-month internship at the University of Nigeria Medical Center. 2. INTRODUCTION
OVERVIEW OF UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA MEDICAL CENTRE
• I completed the statutory six month industrial training at the UNN Medical center
• UNN Medical centre was established in 1960 along side the University Of Nigeria,
Nsukka
• It is maintained by the Administration of the University
• It offers 24 hours services.
OBJECTIVE
 The UNN medical Centre has the goal of becoming a World-class health center
strengthening all the section to the extent of the required standard, through
formulation of policies based on current medical health guides.

4. DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF THE
ESTABLISHMENT
RECEPTION SECTION
 Registration of patients
 Allocation of sample container to the
patient
 Collection of samples from the patients
 Compilation and issuing of results

5. HAEMATOLOGY SECTION
This is where all the diseases of the blood are being isolated and
examined.
• Hematological tests can evaluate numerous conditions involving
blood and its components.
Tests carried out in this section include:
 Packed Cell Volume (PCV) test
 Retroviral Screening (RVS) test
 Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (Pregnancy test)
 VDRL Strip test
 WIDAL test
 Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) test

6. MICROBIOLOGY/PARASITOLOGY
SECTION
This section deals with tests for a wide range of human pathogens
including bacteria ,enteric parasites etc.
TESTS DONE IN THIS SCETION:
• Tests carried out here include:
 Malaria parasite (MP) test
 Feacal Occult Blood (FOB) test
 Stool analysis
 Helicobacter pyroli (HP) test
 Urine microscopy, culture and sensitivity
 High Vaginal Swab (HVS) test

8. TEST FOR H.PYLORI
This test is used to quantify the presence of Helicobacter
pylori (bacteria) in a stool.
- This test can also be conducted when a patient is
suspected of peptic ulcer disease (PUD).
Procedure:
- An applicator stick is used to pick a small portion of the
stool.
- Dip into the helicobacter pylori buffer and shake
vigorously
(total dissolving of the stool sample)
- Add two drops on the H.pylori Kit .

10. CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY
SECTION
This section involves biochemical investigation of
bodily fluids such as blood and urine
Tests carried out here include:
 Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) test
 Random Blood Sugar (RBS) test
 Urinalysis
 ABO blood group test

12. • CHALLENGES I ENCOUNTERED DURING THE SIWES
PROGRAMME
1. Inability to operate certain equipment as they are
delicate and expensive.
• 2. Unavailability of substandard materials and
equipment was a concern
• In conclusion, the six months Industrial training was a
memorable experience, which has helped me to
understand my course, especially in the applied and
practical areas.
