Media literacy involves developing competencies that enable citizens to control their own lives and take advantage of opportunities. It includes knowing how to keep personal information private, differentiating media violence from real-world violence, recognizing bias and stereotyping, consuming and producing media for civic engagement, understanding how media messages are constructed, and knowing which online information is reliable. Media literacy is defined as the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and create messages across contexts. It also involves developing individual competencies and understanding environmental factors like media education and policies. The conceptual map of media literacy focuses on competencies like privacy awareness, which involves knowledge, skills and attitudes regarding privacy.
The document discusses the concepts of user empowerment, inclusion, media literacy, and privacy. It provides definitions and perspectives on empowerment as strengthening people's control over their lives and opportunities. Inclusion is defined as including people socially and digitally, enabling all people to use technology. Media literacy involves accessing, analyzing, evaluating and creating messages. Privacy is noted as a necessary condition for inclusion. The document explores searching for connections between these concepts.
This is the presentation of Pieter Jan Valgaeren, Eva Lievens, Peggy Valcke of the ICRI research group KU Leuven at the IAMCR conference in Istanbul, July 2011
This document discusses initiatives to promote inclusion and reduce exclusion of vulnerable groups using social media and digital technologies. It proposes a bottom-up strategy that actively involves these groups. Key points addressed include increasing digital skills and accessibility, adapting content to personal needs, incorporating social media, and ensuring communication of results and evaluations. Challenges discussed are balancing strictly versus guided bottom-up approaches and whether initiatives should target groups prone to exclusion. Contact information is provided for further discussion.
