MEDIA STUDIES EVALUATION: SUPERHERO PROJECT BY ARYA CHOPRA & RYAN CROLL
Batman Begins Trailer
Typical storylines such as Circe, Orpheus & Achilles Movies: Batman, X-Men, Lara Croft Trilogy: The ‘Adventures of Mystic Woman’ Sticking to conventions: such as the same typical story lines. Sticking to the credit structure – 20th Century Fox. Gain/born with superhero powers; something has happened to make them want to stop crime Keeping the binary opposition of Villain Challenging conventions using a female superhero because mostly they are males e.g. Superman, Spiderman, Batman etc. A lot of these movies start off by Comic Books which our movie differs too. In what ways does your media product use, developer challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
How does your media product represent particular social groups? The cast would have been people who are from different cultures, backgrounds, nationalities & race. There will be a variety of people to attract all people. The age range we said would be teenager to young adults, because the plot is complex and it would be easier to understand. Main protagonist in the film is a female – business woman C1 – C2 Working class people Stereotypes of woman: girly, weak, into make-up, shopping etc She is like this but is also independent, strong-minded, and sociable. (shown by Mise-En-Scene) Comparing her to Brooke Davis in the TV Show - One Tree Hill. She is an independent character; she owns her own clothes business and she is a strong minded person. She could be compared to Gretchen Morgan in the TV Show Prison Break. She is a female assassin, and she is the type of character that you don’t want to cross. She is clever and conniving, and gets things done. You could also compare her to Lara Croft; because she is somewhat like a heroine.
20th Century Fox – successful & well known Ability to pay for advertising and distribution and to promote us. Posters/movie trailers/website (clips) page etc Works on franchises such as X-Men – Our film is supposed to be part of a trilogy They have the money to support the film financially and to make people aware of the product. They can distribute/advertise it internationally, in Britain and in the USA. If it is successful expand to other countries. First releases - in cinema’s, then on the web, then on TV. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Mainly Females – Main Protagonist is a woman Target teenagers & young adults – Cast will involve males & females The colour of the credits (purple/pink) and the Mise-en-Scene (business dress) attract this particular audience People are waiting for a good female superhero movie. Secondary Audiences – Men as well; Action Movies/some comedy as well as drama & action in our movie Age range – 15-50 Who would be the audience for your media product?
How did you attract/address your audience? Stereotypically – make up – jewellery Female protagonist – hair back wearing earrings – wealth/rich person Business Dress – Blue Scarf – C1/C2 (WC TO HC) Phone – Sociable character Radio – listening to reporter talk about crime in her city – lets audience understand the plot. Newspaper – owns a newspaper company – Republic Express Coffee Drinker
THE TEENAGE AUDIENCE Chewing Gum – ties a mess – lazy attitude Typical Adult – reading newspaper – drinking coffee – presented as professional The mail – reinforces business audience – C1 C2 WC Not in proper uniform – rebellious teenager character
High Key Lighting so it is clear to see facial expressions/settings etc. A Briefcase - business woman – organised and responsible character Setting – in a kitchen – stereotypically a woman cooking Credits colour show costume of mystic woman Costume - Woman wearing heels
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? Learning how to use the camera and the tripod. Learning how to use different shots such as close ups, medium shots. How to position the camera. The rule of thirds/ 180 degree rule Editing – Text Edit, IMovie, putting on audio sound files, 20th Century Fox logo, learning how to put on credits and how to make them. Using different transitions and effects on lettering Improve upon getting a more diverse range of camera shots and using audio in our work.
180 Degree Rule
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? Understanding of media product knowledge is better Time to plan & organise – schedule & research into superhero movies so we know the flavour and conventions Time to design idea’s – used the blog to keep track of our work Learnt how to function the tripod & camera Learnt how to use iMovie & cut/put bits in such as the 20th Century Logo & Diegetic sound – audio file Improvements – Variety of shots/more effects/ better quality camera/ exaggerated performance & improve acting.
