Media questionnaire analysis
- 1. Media Questionnaire Analysis I carried out this primary research in the form of a questionnaire to ask 8 questions to my peers at Eccles College, this means that the age of this research is between 16 to 18 which is who my magazine will be aimed at as my target audience. Favourite Genre Dubstep Electro Reggae Drum & Bass Indie This question enables me to understand what the preference of music is inside Eccles College where the questionnaires were filled in. The preference out of the choice I gave them was the Indie genre, as shown on the pie chart. This will mainly be due to the upcoming artists which play ‘Indie’ music which have become a lot more popular over the past decade. How Do People Consume Music iPod/iTunes Youtube Music TV Web 2.0
- 2. This question was a very important question for me as I am surprised that no one that I asked listens to their music through Web 2.0 technology such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. I was mainly surprised by this due to the massive popularity of these websites. YouTube however is extremely popular after its release in 2004. The appeal about YouTube is that you can see videos of the artists and it is very easy to find out about new music through YouTube due to the growing size of the file sharing website. YouTube can also advertise products and magazines which would benefit a new and upcoming magazine. The other major benefit is that it is free to use, whereas using your iPod which is as popular as YouTube costs money. This puts people off using iTunes as if you want to listen to a full song you have to buy that song. Music television has been and gone with my generation as people rarely sit at home and watch music on television as most teenagers and young adults have computers or other ways of listening to music. Music television was only popular when music videos where first being brought out onto are TVs. 7 6 5 4 Yes 3 No 2 1 0 Do Free Items usually persuade you to buy a magazine? This question enabled me to see that 16 to 18 year olds aren’t persuaded by free items in a magazine. In my opinion this is due to the fact that free items are usually cheap and poor in quality this means that if I choose to have a free item on my magazine I would have to make it better quality than the other magazines in the market. The next question was ‘If the magazine had some aspect that related to web 2.0 technology would that appeal to you? If yes why?’ This question allowed me to realise that people are more interested in the internet than magazine as the majority of the people I asked said yes, because it allows you to find more in depth information out about the magazine and the artists. This means that with the research I have done I will also have a YouTube channel and also a Facebook page this means that my magazine could have a larger audience as people will hear about the magazine through these sites. And artists can also advertise themselves through the YouTube channel with their songs and gig highlights.
- 3. The graph below shows the majority of 16 to 18 year olds think that a house style is important to a magazine. They think this because a house style gives a magazine a recognisable style and that attracts an audience as well as making it easier to look out for. The house style also makes the magazine more attractive. Is a house style important when recognising a magazine? E.g. Use of similar colours etc. Yes No The next question I asked was ‘Do magazines that focus on a range of music put you off as you are not interested in other genres?’ I found that the 60 % of people that I asked said yes. This can be because some magazines can have a range of artists and bands this allows the audience to be larger but the majority dislikes it as they would rather have more information about their specific genre. The last question I asked was ‘what genres can you think of that does not have a magazine dedicated to it?’ The answer I got was dubstep and drum and bass, this confirms my first thoughts of doing a magazine like this as there is a gap in the market.
