The document discusses what the author learned about various technologies through creating a media product. The author learned how to use features of Tumblr like saving drafts. They also learned to use SurveyPlanet to create and distribute a questionnaire to gather information from their target audience. In creating the product, the author used YouTube but had to learn how to delete a video after accidentally only uploading 30 seconds. Premier Pro was used to add visual effects like distortion and editing tools were used to arrange sound and shots to convey emotions. The author also learned how different shot types like close-ups and long shots can be used to impact the audience's feelings.
2. tumblr In the process of creating my product, I used Tumblr
to post the creation process eg the storyboard and
results from my preliminary questionnaire. Because of
this, I learnt how to use some features of the website.
For example, I had to save some posts as drafts to
work on them at a different time, so I learnt how to
do this. I also learnt how to use SlideShare in order to
be able to post some of my work to Tumblr, as some
formats cannot be posted directly to the website.
3. survey
planet
In order to gather information about my target audience
for my product, I learnt how to use the website
SurveyPlanet, on which I created a questionnaire. I
believe I used it well, as I included a range of open and
closed questions, which gave the participants freedom to
give as much or as little information as they would like.
The results from the questionnaire were helpful in
designing and creating my product: for example, in
answer to the question: “do you prefer action based or a
dark/ominous feeling?”, most people chose
“dark/ominous”, which is the direction I took with my own
product. However, I could have used the website better
by sending it to more people to gain a large range of
responses.
4. youtube I usedYouTube to upload my product; however, an error
caused me to have to learn how to delete aYouTube
video: I accidentally uploaded only thirty seconds of my
opening title sequence. This meant I had to look up how
to delete a video, and can now successfully do it.
5. visual effects
(premier
pro)
I wanted to distort some parts of my filming to create an
eerie and slightly shocking atmosphere; I did this by using
some visual effects. I added these using Premier Pro, and
experimented with all of them before choosing the two
shown below, which I think have the effect that I wanted.
Coupled with the sound effects (radio static), I believe
they worked very well, as it’s very unexpected and gives
the feeling that something has gone wrong.
6. editing
(premier
pro)
In order to convey the emotions/atmosphere I had in mind, I
used editing – for example: the sound, and the shot transitions.
The most important thing I used was simply the cutting tool,
which was useful in rearranging the sound and shots how I
wanted. For the sound, I aligned the radio static with the visual
effects; the sound of breath with the boy blowing out the
match; the creaking with the swings; the ominous ‘hum’ building
with the tension, and the natural bird noises after the crime. For
the transitions, I used the cutting tool to split up and rearrange
some lengthy shots I filmed of the boy playing, using jump cuts,
in order to convey time passing and a casual feeling – the calm
before the storm. I also used jump cuts with the shots of the
swings.
7. effects of
shots
(camera)
I learnt how to use the camera effectively; how the framing and
types of shots can be used in order to convey a certain emotion
or feeling to the audience. For example, I experimented with lots
of close ups and extreme close ups and found that they were a
good way to communicate the tension that I wanted in the
opening scene/title sequence. I used extreme long shots to,
largely, do the opposite of this: create a ‘normal’ and relaxed
atmosphere. I think this worked well, especially in the title
sequence, however, in the opening scene I could have used more
close ups in the build up to the crime in order to make the scene
even more tense.
