2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
2. WELCOME
Welcome!
Today I will be talking to you about 2 film ideas. I will be going through the
synopsis, character profiles, target audience and any additional information
such as the marketplace and form and style of my films.
3. FILM IDEA 1- ‘ENIGMA’
ENIGMA:
A puzzling or inexplicable occurrence or situation.
LENGTH OF FILM:
A short film with a running time between 5-10 minutes.
GENRE:
Psychological thriller
TAGLINE:
Too many questions, not enough answers.
4. CHARACTER PROFILES
Main Character:
George, ‘The Man’
My film will predominantly include an adult male, with dark/grey hair and a slight
beard.
The clothes this main character will wear is a fisherman’s outfit, therefore beige,
waterproof type clothes with a hat and all of the equipment needed to fish. (Such as
fishing rod, hook, camping chair etc).
Throughout the film this character will be quite mysterious.
5. CHARACTER PROFILES
Policeman:
The policeman I will include in a couple of scenes within the short film, he will be an adult
male in police uniform, for the scenes where the TV shows the interview at the scene of the
crime.
The Wife of George:
This character will only be shown extremely briefly, and won’t necessarily even be seen, just
heard. For example, in one of the key last scenes, she will be sat with George, asking him a
question whilst watching the news.
6. SYNOPSIS
ACT 1
The short film will start with shots of the scene, a quiet, isolated but captivating lake, with a
lot of mystery behind it.
George is lying ‘dead’ on the ground, cuts and bruising over his face.
His fingers or eyes may flicker or move, revealing perhaps something secretive to the
audience, which then follows up with a blank screen or a quick switch to the upcoming
scenes.
7. SYNOPSIS
ACT 2
The next couple of scenes is what had happened to George, the main character and what
stands in his way.
It will include a news bulletin with the wife of George, with a television that is displaying the
scene of the crime with an interview, from a Policeman, where forensics are searching for
evidence of perhaps a murder or drowning that has been committed within the lake.
It will then lead onto the main scenes within the film, explaining what happened with dramatic
and nerve-wracking scenes of the fisherman, the build up of the pleasant quiet afternoon,
until everything goes wrong.
8. SYNOPSIS
ACT 3
Act 3 is in particular the most intriguing and thought provoking.
This is because these are the scenes that tie the whole plot together, concludes the crisis and
therefore makes the audience reflect, deliberate and reason what has happened and why this has
occurred.
The last scene for ‘Enigma’, shows the news bulletin on the television.
The wife will turn to George and say “Isn’t that where you went?”, to which he turns his head and
shuffles a little, moves his fingers towards his neck, where the cut in the beginning scene of him
lying ‘dead’ on the ground has now been exposed to the discussion that he was either alive, a
clone, or is the whole film and George’s life in a loop?
The audience’s imagination decides.
9. TARGET AUDIENCE
My target audience is for late teenagers/young adults – adults.
I have decided the target audience for my film would be for older viewers as they would be
able to follow the psychological side of my thriller and as a result appreciate the plot twists
etc more.
On the NRS Scale, I would put my target audience into the social grade category of C2-B
which is a skilled working class to middle class.
• The film fits into a target audience category on the 4cs Scale extremely well. The film fits
into ‘The Reformer’ or ‘The Explorer’ category.
10. FORM AND STYLE
The form and style of my film will be thoughtful and convincing throughout.
The camera angles I certainly want to include are some initial establishing shots of the location, a
close up shot of the man’s facial expressions or face scars, birds eye view shots, shots from the water
and possibly drone shots of the location.
It will be filmed on a Canon Camera, as it has high quality which is what I am looking for, and different
lenses to help with perspectives of the characters and lets the setting come alive.
The genre I want to try and recreate is a psychological thriller, this is so the film leaves the
audience even more interested than when it began, and leaves them with so many logical
questions and thoughts afterwards, making them want to watch the film again and again.
11. MARKETPLACE
Within the film industry market, I see my film being shown predominantly in cinemas, if it was
longer and turned into the same length as other cinema films. Other than this, YouTube and
‘Short of the Week’ would be a perfect place for this to be displayed also.
There is scope for a sequel or even a series to be made out of these short films, as I feel like
they would be able to be adjusted to any other type of character and not just a fisherman.
This also means that each film can be targeted more at the other genders, hobbies, likes and
dislikes so everybody gets a chance to enjoy these types of films too.
12. SAMPLE MUSIC AND PRE PRODUCTION
MATERIAL
FREESOUND- Scary Ambient Music (Kill Shock)
I have chosen this background music, as it is not extremely distracting from the
film, but adds tension and mystery to the audience. It has no lyrics as I feel as if
this would make it too off putting for the audience and also wouldn’t be able to
hear the dialogue over the top of this too.

13. FILM IDEA 2- LILO TO HELL
LENGTH OF FILM:
A short film with a running time between 5-10 minutes.
GENRE:
Psychological thriller/ comedy (comedic elements)
TAGLINE:
A tourist’s dream turned into one big nightmare.
14. CHARACTER PROFILES
Main Character:
Darren, ‘The Tourist’
My film will predominantly include an adult male, dressed in bright, tacky, tourist outfit such
as a Hawaiian shirt and perhaps tight swimming trunks.
The Children
The children within ‘Lilo To Hell’ include a boy and a girl aged around 5-10 years of age and
are also on holiday with Darren, their father. They are dressed in beachwear, swimming
costumes, hats, sunglasses etc.
15. SYNOPSIS
ACT 1
The location is quiet and seems to only have Darren, his family and only a couple of other people on the beach. The
film progresses where Darren is now in deep sleep, and slips into a ‘dream.’
ACT 2
The dream is an ideal setting for Darren and his family. It leads to him on the beach, building sandcastles and
having and pleasurable time with his family doing everything you could dream of on holiday.
ACT 3
A huge storm takes over the island, making the tone of the film turn deadly and tense, followed by an enormous
animal from either land or sea comes and attacks Darren. The end scene is when the ‘attack’ gets to the point
where the ‘dream’ that has now turned into a nightmare, is at breaking point and where a serious injury/death would
have occurred, before a quick sudden change to Darren, lying on his lilo, the exact same type clip and angle as the
beginning.
The plot twist is that there is the same scar/cut in the exact same place as the attack scar in the nightmare, or finds
a certain object that links to the nightmare, leaving the audience to think to themselves and ask themselves
questions such as:
Was this all real life? Was the nightmare real? What happened? Is he still in the dream? Is it all going to happen
again?
16. TARGET AUDIENCE
My target audience will predominantly be aimed at teenagers to young adults.
On the NRS scale, the target audience would be put into categories from D-B, which
represents working class to middle class, mainly because there is no class that isn’t suitable
to watch this.
On the 4Cs scale, the target audience would be aimed more for ‘The Reformers’ or ‘The
Explorers’.
17. FORM AND STYLE
The form and style of ‘Lilo To Hell’ would be clear, comedic, precise but also thrilling.
The camera angles that would be extremely interesting to work with and use, are establishing shots,
birds eye view shots and drone shots of the sea.
Another camera angle that would look perfect in a short film such as ‘Lilo To Hell’, would be
underwater shots and point of view shots.
It will be filmed on a Canon Camera, as it has high quality which is what I am looking for, and different
lenses to help with perspectives of the characters and lets the setting come alive.
The genre I want to try and recreate is a psychological thriller.
I also think a slight comedic element to the film makes the audience even more interested to
watch the film.
18. MARKETPLACE
Within the film industry market, I see my film being shown predominantly in cinemas or at
movie events such as movie nights with all of the family, ‘Short of the Week’ or even
YouTube. Therefore, it involves the whole family as it is something that can be enjoyed by
everyone.
I feel as if there isn’t huge scope for a series for this film, however something could be
changed such as the lilo, or the attack scene could be completely different to change the end
of the film, leaving multiple cliff-hangers for the audience.
19. SAMPLE MUSIC AND PRE PRODUCTION
MATERIAL
FREESOUND- Waters Of Cyprus - Beach
I have chosen this sound to add to the background of my film, as it
has the sound effects of waves which makes the location feel even
more realistic. It has no lyrics as I feel as if this would make it too
distracting for the audience and also wouldn’t be able to hear the
dialogue over the top of this too.
