4. FEMINISM AND WOMEN'S RIGHTS - THIS FILM GIVES AN INSIGHT ON THE 1966 WOMEN’S
LIBERATION MOVEMENT THAT WAS BUILT ON THE FIRST-WAVE FEMINIST MOVEMENT OF THE
EARLY 19TH CENTURY THAT FOCUSED ON WOMEN’S RIGHT TO VOTE. HERE WE SEE THE
HISTORY OF THE STRUGGLE PRIOR TO 1966, AND SOME IMPORTANT EVENTS.
5. ANGER AND REALIZATION AS EMPOWERMENT
In approximately 1966, women across the
United States began scrutinizing their
circumstances more closely. Building upon
the groundwork laid by the first wave of the
feminist movement, they experienced an
awakening. Women started challenging the
dominant narrative shaped by men,
uncovering hidden struggles, including those
faced by women of color, the LGBTQ+
community, and the battle for establishing
Roe vs. Wade.
6. IDENTITY AND SELF EXPRESSION
Many Organizations had their commencement at this period in time.
The national
Organization for
women was
established in 1966.
Their goal was to
promote women's
equality in all
aspects of life.
The women's
liberation movement.
Which was more of a
grassroots
movement consisting
of various groups
banning together.
Women's
International
Terrorist
Conspiracy from
Hell (W.I.T.C.H.)A
radical group that
organized
theatrical protest
raising awareness
Founded in 1973,
NBFO aimed to
address the unique
struggles faced by
Black women and
promote solidarity
within the feminist
movement
7. SOCIAL JUSTICE AND ACTIVISM
In 1968 women organized the Miss
America protest in Atlantic city. The
objective was to bring to light
• The current standards that were
imposed on women.
• To outline that Awards, and
contests were based on
Shallowness
• And the objectification of women
During this time feminist activist lobbied to
make changes for reproductive rights. The
work they did laid the groundwork for
landmark victories like Roe vs Wade in
1973.
Many changes of the era where heavily
influenced, and aided by feminist activist
such as
• The Equal Pay Act of 1963 – was
enforced by feminist
• The Civil Rights Act of 1964- Feminist
utilized this legislature to fight work
discrimination
• Roe v. Wade in 1973- the U.S Supreme
Court legalized abortion Nationwide.
8. HEALING AND
EMPATHY
The film gives snap shots of leaders in
the 1960s and how they viewed
themselves as they fought for
reproductive rights, childcare, equal pay,
sexual liberation, and to change the
culture of how women were sexually
objectified.
We stand on a Pendulum that is ever
swinging by the tides of culture we must
look to our leaders and see where they
push this Pendulum, and the question
arises have we regressed, or have we
advanced?
9. QUESTIONS TO
DISCUSS?
• What is the Current state of the
Feminist movement?
• How has Activism shifted in
modern times considering the
trends that influenced the
overturning of Roe v. Wade?
