A key goal is advancing commitments through the New York Declaration on Forests to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation through conservation and restoration of forests.
Climate Summit Action Areas Resilience
Climate change is increasing natural disasters and exacerbating vulnerability around the world. Governments, the private sector, scientists, and civil society are working to build resilience through partnerships focused on climate information, integrating climate risks into finance, risk financing, and making cities resilient. This Guidebook highlights a number of innovative, practical actions that can be expanded and strengthened with additional partners. The initiatives focus on high-impact areas identified by the United Nations Environment Programme 2013 Emissions Gap Report.
They include adaptation, resilience and disaster risk reduction, agriculture, cities, climate finance, energy efficiency, forests, renewable energy, short-lived climate pollutants and transport. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has documented how transforming to a low-carbon economy will be significantly less costly than failing to act, and many of those costs would be further mitigated by the economic and other benefits of reduced climate change. The initiatives showcased in Abu Dhabi demonstrate that affordable solutions are already available to cut emissions, strengthen adaptation and improve people’s well-being. This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

The program will expand our perspectives and appreciation for our blue planet, build new foundations for our relationship to the ocean, and ignite a wave of action toward necessary change.

- 1. 1 Press Briefing Preparations for Climate Summit 2014 Monday, 15 September 11:00 a.m. UN Headquarters, Room S-237 Mr. Selwin Hart, Director of the Secretary-General’s Climate Change Support Team 15 September—Ahead of the Climate Summit that will take place on 23 September at UN Headquarters in New York, Mr. Selwin Hart will brief the media on the Summit, as well as on logistics, preparations, and media opportunities throughout the day. More than 120 Heads of State and Government will be attending the one-day Summit hosted by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to generate political will toward a meaningful universal climate agreement in 2015, and advance action on the ground that will reduce emissions and build resilience to the impacts of climate change. A provisional list of leaders who have asked to speak at the Summit can be found at http://ow.ly/BtQhZ The Summit will mark the first time in five years that world leaders will get together to chart a bold, new course of action on climate change. The Secretary-General has asked leaders to announce significant and substantial initiatives to help move the world toward a path that will limit global warming. Announcements at the Summit will be aimed at mobilizing finance for climate action, increasing the use of renewable energy, increasing energy efficiency, reducing deforestation, promoting climate smart agriculture, building resilience, reducing pollutants, and promoting climate action in the world’s cities. In addition to the leaders from governments, there will also be strong participation from leaders from business, finance and civil society. This includes CEOs and managing directors from companies as varied as the Asia Pulp and Paper Group, Bank of
- 2. 2 America, Cargill, GDF SUEZ, Golden Agri-Resources Ltd, Ingersoll-Rand plc, KfW Bankengruppe, McDonald's Corporation, Saudi Aramco, Unilever, Walmart, Yes Bank Limited, APG and Credit Agricole. The Summit will consist of an opening ceremony, announcements by Heads of State and Governments, announcements by the private sector, the launch of new initiatives that address key action areas by coalitions of governments, businesses and civil society organizations. There will also be sessions that focus on critical aspects of climate change, including science, people living on the frontlines of climate change, the societal benefits of action, and the economic case for action on climate change. The Secretary-General will summarise the outcome of the day at the closing ceremony.
