Media Task 2 – Conventions Of
A Music Video
Parasko Kkolos
Rizzle Kicks
Miss Cigarette
Mise En Scene…
The video is filmed using a lot of natural light which works really well
because all of the shots, whether outside or inside are really bright. Both
of them wear similar clothing which adds to the fact that they are good
friends and shows their relationship. The setting is in the street or just in
an apartment which is quite casual which relates to the lyrics of the song
about smoking. Props are used to link in with the song lyrics but also just
to add to the casual nature of the video. ‘Miss Cigarette’ is a metaphor
used about smoking cigarettes and being addicted to them and so a girl
smoking and cigarettes on there own are used to relate to the lyrics. The
singing is synced in well with the timing of the clips which means the
video will look professional and effective. They sing quite casually and at
times almost just talking but that is what makes them different because
they mix genres together.
Editing…
The editing is really effective because each cut to a different shot is
timed just at the right point with the rhythm of the song and this makes
the it more enjoyable to watch. If the timing was off it wouldn’t have the
same impact on the audience. The song is a fairly slow song but the
pace of the editing makes the video seem faster and more enjoyable.
Camera…
There is a lot of two shots used because that way you can see the
relationship between Jordan and Harley and also it creates effects such
as symmetry within the frame. Most of the time the two shots are also
mid shots so that you are close up enough to see them singing and see
how they act but also show some of the costume and setting. There is a
mixture of high angles and low angles to add variety. There is a variety
of effects such as a shallow depth of field and camera movements like a
pan across and a camera track. These help to follow the artists while
they are moving around.
Ed Sheeran
Sing
Mise En Scene…
The lighting in the video is dark which adds to the atmosphere of
partying/being drunk. There is also bright hard light in a different
setting in the video which contrasts the darkness to create a
atmosphere and look to the video. There is a number of settings
including dark streets, inside cars, in a club and I front of a crazy
backdrop. The sets link in with the lyrics of the song being about
partying, loving/needing a woman and so the audience will get a
better understanding/connection when listening and watching the
song. In the party scenes they are all wearing revealing/messy
clothes to add to the reality of what's going on and further links
the lyrics to what you are seeing. Quite a lot of props are used in
the video such as drinks/alcohol for the party scenes and a guitar
to show that it is in fact Ed Sheeran playing the guitar and not a
band behind the scenes.
Editing…
There is a lot of different settings and multiple people starring in
the video so the editing is has been cleverly done to cut between
each shot and keep it in sync with the lyrics. The song is upbeat
and so the cuts between the shots have been timed perfectly to
fit with the rhythm. A green screen has been used for some of
the shots to create better scenes to fit with the lyrics. They have
been edited really well so that it looks real and you cant really
notice. Also there has been some overlays like in one of my print
screens where there is a shot of the puppet singing and then
another layer on top.
Camera…
There is a large variety of shot types in the video including mid
shots, to show enough of the singer to see there face and what
they are doing, some long shots/establishing shots to allow you
to see the setting and also certain props that may be in use.
There is also close ups on objects of significance such as Ed
Sheerans guitar and also when the puppet is singing, which links
to the song title and lyrics ‘sing’.
Olly Murs
Heart Skips a Beat
Mise En Scene…
The video is filmed outdoors and so therefore uses natural light
which is good because its bright and lights everything up evenly,
They are all wearing casual clothes which adds to the style of the
fun and colourful video. It is set outside in some sort of park or
street with lots of people hanging around. It is a colourful and casual
setting to match the singers costumes and the nature of the song.
The singers themselves don’t use any props but there are a lot in
the background used by other people. The acting of the background
people is fast and fun which helps keep the pace of the song up.
The song is up beat and so the acting of the people and signers is
quick and matches the rhythm of the song.
Editing…
The video is edited so that the clips are synced with beats in the
song and so they change quite often and fast which keeps the
audience hooked in and not bored. The song is up beat and so the
clips have been edited to fit with the same pace. There are clips of
people in a few different parts of the setting which are mixed up and
alternated as the video goes on to ass a variety. Although the same
settings are repeated, there is normally a different shot type so for
example a long shot instead of a previous mid shot, or a low angle
instead of a square on shot.
Camera…
The majority of shots are mid shots which allow you to see the
singers face and shoulder. This means you can clearly see what
they are saying and also their facial expressions. There is also
some long shots to show more of the people and set, two/three
shots to show multiple singers and establishing shots which show a
lot of the setting and what is going on.
There is also use of camera movements such as a pan across and
camera track to follow the singers movements.
Rizzle Kicks
Down With The Trumpets
Mise En Scene…
The video is once again set outdoors which means the set is lit up
with a lot of natural light therefore making the footage look clear and
crisp. The setting is various different places such as roads and lanes
which are all well lit by the natural light. They help portray a fun and
everyday kind of look to the video. The singers are wearing casual
clothes so link with the basic settings and everyday look. Jordan is
carrying a boom box in his hands which also shows them both on a
TV screen. While they sing, the TV shows things related to the lyrics
and adds to the fun look of the video. They also use a trumpet in the
song which obviously links in with the song title and lyrics. The
singing is synced in well with the timing of the clips which means the
video will look professional and effective. They sing casually as they
walk around using a mixture of the genres rap and pop.
Editing…
The editing is really effective because each cut to a different shot is
timed just at the right point of each beat and so you watch the video
in time with the rhythm of what your hearing which is more
entertaining. If the timing was off it wouldn’t have the same impact on
the audience. The song is quite upbeat and so the clips of them
constantly walking around in sync with the beat allows the video to
flow nicely.
Camera…
The majority of the shots types are mid shot two shots of Jordan and
Harley which shows the relationship between the two of them and
also it means they are close enough to the camera for the audience
to see their facial expressions. There is also some close ups of the
TV screen on the boom box which is normally when the image being
shown links to the line of the song that is being sung. Camera
movements such as a track and pan are used to follow the singers as
they move around.
Wretch 32
Don’t Go
Mise En Scene…
The video is filmed outside so has a lot of natural light. Although it
is very bright, it is a bit grey which could be pathetic fallacy, linking
to the mood of the song. They are wearing casual-smart clothes
which links to the setting of being in a city where a lot of people
are smart in suits etc. A lot of people are in the background at
times as if they don’t even realise the singers are there. This links
in with the song being about letting someone go as if he is
invisible. The singers facial expressions are sad/down to give the
audience a better perception of the emotions that come with the
lyrics.
Editing…
There a two or three different places that each of the singers are at
and shots of them at each one are mixed up and cut between one
and another. These cuts are fairly slow so that the fit nicely with
the pace of the song and fit with the lyrics and who is singing as
well. The different clips of each setting are also mixed up into
different shot types as well, so when you see it first is may be a
square on shot and then later in the song there will be the same
setting but a low angle shot.
Camera…
The video opens with a mid shot pan of the main singer to
introduce him. The majority of the shots are mid shots so you can
see the singers facial expressions and connect with the song
more. There is also some long shots/establishing shots to show
where the singer is, for example alone in the middle of a lot of
other people, which links with the song lyrics about being alone
and not letting someone go. A mixture of low angles and high
angles are used which can make the singer look ore vulnerable or
more strong. If he is on his own its normally a low angle to make
him look strong but then when he is surrounded by people it is a
high angle to show him as weak or vulnerable.

A2 Media Task 2 – Conventions Of A Music Video

  • 1. Media Task 2 – Conventions Of A Music Video Parasko Kkolos
  • 2. Rizzle Kicks Miss Cigarette Mise En Scene… The video is filmed using a lot of natural light which works really well because all of the shots, whether outside or inside are really bright. Both of them wear similar clothing which adds to the fact that they are good friends and shows their relationship. The setting is in the street or just in an apartment which is quite casual which relates to the lyrics of the song about smoking. Props are used to link in with the song lyrics but also just to add to the casual nature of the video. ‘Miss Cigarette’ is a metaphor used about smoking cigarettes and being addicted to them and so a girl smoking and cigarettes on there own are used to relate to the lyrics. The singing is synced in well with the timing of the clips which means the video will look professional and effective. They sing quite casually and at times almost just talking but that is what makes them different because they mix genres together. Editing… The editing is really effective because each cut to a different shot is timed just at the right point with the rhythm of the song and this makes the it more enjoyable to watch. If the timing was off it wouldn’t have the same impact on the audience. The song is a fairly slow song but the pace of the editing makes the video seem faster and more enjoyable. Camera… There is a lot of two shots used because that way you can see the relationship between Jordan and Harley and also it creates effects such as symmetry within the frame. Most of the time the two shots are also mid shots so that you are close up enough to see them singing and see how they act but also show some of the costume and setting. There is a mixture of high angles and low angles to add variety. There is a variety of effects such as a shallow depth of field and camera movements like a pan across and a camera track. These help to follow the artists while they are moving around.
  • 3. Ed Sheeran Sing Mise En Scene… The lighting in the video is dark which adds to the atmosphere of partying/being drunk. There is also bright hard light in a different setting in the video which contrasts the darkness to create a atmosphere and look to the video. There is a number of settings including dark streets, inside cars, in a club and I front of a crazy backdrop. The sets link in with the lyrics of the song being about partying, loving/needing a woman and so the audience will get a better understanding/connection when listening and watching the song. In the party scenes they are all wearing revealing/messy clothes to add to the reality of what's going on and further links the lyrics to what you are seeing. Quite a lot of props are used in the video such as drinks/alcohol for the party scenes and a guitar to show that it is in fact Ed Sheeran playing the guitar and not a band behind the scenes. Editing… There is a lot of different settings and multiple people starring in the video so the editing is has been cleverly done to cut between each shot and keep it in sync with the lyrics. The song is upbeat and so the cuts between the shots have been timed perfectly to fit with the rhythm. A green screen has been used for some of the shots to create better scenes to fit with the lyrics. They have been edited really well so that it looks real and you cant really notice. Also there has been some overlays like in one of my print screens where there is a shot of the puppet singing and then another layer on top. Camera… There is a large variety of shot types in the video including mid shots, to show enough of the singer to see there face and what they are doing, some long shots/establishing shots to allow you to see the setting and also certain props that may be in use. There is also close ups on objects of significance such as Ed Sheerans guitar and also when the puppet is singing, which links to the song title and lyrics ‘sing’.
  • 4. Olly Murs Heart Skips a Beat Mise En Scene… The video is filmed outdoors and so therefore uses natural light which is good because its bright and lights everything up evenly, They are all wearing casual clothes which adds to the style of the fun and colourful video. It is set outside in some sort of park or street with lots of people hanging around. It is a colourful and casual setting to match the singers costumes and the nature of the song. The singers themselves don’t use any props but there are a lot in the background used by other people. The acting of the background people is fast and fun which helps keep the pace of the song up. The song is up beat and so the acting of the people and signers is quick and matches the rhythm of the song. Editing… The video is edited so that the clips are synced with beats in the song and so they change quite often and fast which keeps the audience hooked in and not bored. The song is up beat and so the clips have been edited to fit with the same pace. There are clips of people in a few different parts of the setting which are mixed up and alternated as the video goes on to ass a variety. Although the same settings are repeated, there is normally a different shot type so for example a long shot instead of a previous mid shot, or a low angle instead of a square on shot. Camera… The majority of shots are mid shots which allow you to see the singers face and shoulder. This means you can clearly see what they are saying and also their facial expressions. There is also some long shots to show more of the people and set, two/three shots to show multiple singers and establishing shots which show a lot of the setting and what is going on. There is also use of camera movements such as a pan across and camera track to follow the singers movements.
  • 5. Rizzle Kicks Down With The Trumpets Mise En Scene… The video is once again set outdoors which means the set is lit up with a lot of natural light therefore making the footage look clear and crisp. The setting is various different places such as roads and lanes which are all well lit by the natural light. They help portray a fun and everyday kind of look to the video. The singers are wearing casual clothes so link with the basic settings and everyday look. Jordan is carrying a boom box in his hands which also shows them both on a TV screen. While they sing, the TV shows things related to the lyrics and adds to the fun look of the video. They also use a trumpet in the song which obviously links in with the song title and lyrics. The singing is synced in well with the timing of the clips which means the video will look professional and effective. They sing casually as they walk around using a mixture of the genres rap and pop. Editing… The editing is really effective because each cut to a different shot is timed just at the right point of each beat and so you watch the video in time with the rhythm of what your hearing which is more entertaining. If the timing was off it wouldn’t have the same impact on the audience. The song is quite upbeat and so the clips of them constantly walking around in sync with the beat allows the video to flow nicely. Camera… The majority of the shots types are mid shot two shots of Jordan and Harley which shows the relationship between the two of them and also it means they are close enough to the camera for the audience to see their facial expressions. There is also some close ups of the TV screen on the boom box which is normally when the image being shown links to the line of the song that is being sung. Camera movements such as a track and pan are used to follow the singers as they move around.
  • 6. Wretch 32 Don’t Go Mise En Scene… The video is filmed outside so has a lot of natural light. Although it is very bright, it is a bit grey which could be pathetic fallacy, linking to the mood of the song. They are wearing casual-smart clothes which links to the setting of being in a city where a lot of people are smart in suits etc. A lot of people are in the background at times as if they don’t even realise the singers are there. This links in with the song being about letting someone go as if he is invisible. The singers facial expressions are sad/down to give the audience a better perception of the emotions that come with the lyrics. Editing… There a two or three different places that each of the singers are at and shots of them at each one are mixed up and cut between one and another. These cuts are fairly slow so that the fit nicely with the pace of the song and fit with the lyrics and who is singing as well. The different clips of each setting are also mixed up into different shot types as well, so when you see it first is may be a square on shot and then later in the song there will be the same setting but a low angle shot. Camera… The video opens with a mid shot pan of the main singer to introduce him. The majority of the shots are mid shots so you can see the singers facial expressions and connect with the song more. There is also some long shots/establishing shots to show where the singer is, for example alone in the middle of a lot of other people, which links with the song lyrics about being alone and not letting someone go. A mixture of low angles and high angles are used which can make the singer look ore vulnerable or more strong. If he is on his own its normally a low angle to make him look strong but then when he is surrounded by people it is a high angle to show him as weak or vulnerable.
