2. What is a Measuring Tape?
The Measuring Tape is a flexible ruler that is used to measure distance.
Its design allows for a measure of great lengths and is carried easily and
its flexible nature allows it to measure around corners and curves.
The first record of the measuring tape being used was by the Romans,
However in Dec 1864 William Bangs and in Jan 1922 Hiram Farrand got
the patent for spring return pocket tape and concave – convex tape
respectively.
3. Parts and How to Use
1.The Tape: The tape is the actual working
part which is usually a flexible, coiled up ruler.
The total length of the tape determines the
range of measurements you can make. To use
it, simply stretch out the tape and just beyond
the tip the numbers begin, referring to those
numbers you get your measurement.(The tip is
included in the measurement)

2.The Spring and Stop: A tape measure
retracts because the tape connects to a flat
metal spring coiled around a central post
inside the tape housing. Almost all tape
measures feature a lock button to keep the
tape extended; the operation of this button is
very simple. It simply locks against the tape to
prevent it from moving when you engage it.
5. Parts and How to Use
3.The Hooked Tab: At the end of every tape measure is a metal
hooked tab that performs the important function of preventing the tape
from disappearing inside the housing, but that isn't all it does. When you
need to make an outside measurement, you can hook the tab over an
edge so you can stretch the tape.
6. Different Types
There are two basic types of tape measures with cases, spring return
pocket tape measures and long tape measures.
Spring return pocket tape measures will generally fit in a pocket. The
tape is returned to the case by a spring mechanism. Pocket tape
measures have a tape one foot to fifteen feet in length.
7. Different Types
A second tape measure design is what is
called the long tape. These are cased tape
measures with tapes of 25, 50, 75, 100, 200,
300 and even 500 feet in length, designed for
engineers and builders. Long tapes instead of
being returned by a spring, are usually
returned by hand crank.
8. Different Types
Tape measures are also designed for specific uses or trades. Tapes may
have different scales, be made of different materials, and be of different
lengths depending on the use it is intended for. Tape measures that
were intended for use in tailoring or dressmaking were made from
flexible cloth or plastic. They are named "sewing tape". These types of
tape measures were mainly used for the measuring of the human's
waist line.
9. Cost and
Least Count
The range of cost of
different measuring tapes
can be 49 to 2000 INR
depending on length and
type of the tape.
Usually the Least count of
a Measuring tape is 1mm
and 1/16 inch.
