This document provides instructions and materials for determining soil pH using a pH meter in a geography lab. It includes a list of required equipment such as a pH meter, balance, beaker, and conical flask. The procedure involves calibrating the pH meter, weighing 5g of soil, adding it to water, and allowing it to stand before measuring the pH value displayed on the meter. The student is asked to record the temperature and calculate the pH to classify the soil as acidic, basic, or neutral.

6. Students have to write the following description during the experiment
Determination of Soil pH
With the help of a pH meter
Principle
• The soil pH reflects whether a soil is acidic, neutral,
basic or alkaline. The acidity, neutrality or alkalinity of a
soil is measured in terms of hydrogen ion activity of the
soil water system. The negative logarithm of the H ion
activity is called pH and thus pH of a soil is a measure of
only the intensity of activity and not the amount of the
acid present. The pH range normally found in soils
varies from 3 to 9. Mathematically pH is represented
as, log 1/H = - log H+
7. Apparatus:
• Sample solution
• pH Meter
• Physical Balance
• Oven
• Beaker
• Conical Flask
• Measuring Cylinder
• Petri dish
• Filter Paper
• Funnel
• Mortar and
pestle
• Glass Rod.
8. Procedure:
• The pH meter was calibrated using pH 7 buffer solution.
• Then the meter was adjusted with known pH of buffer
solutions 4.0 and 9.2.
• 5.0 g of soil was weighed and transferred into
100 ml beaker.
• 50 ml distilled water was added and stirred well with a
glass rod.
• This was allowed to stand for half an hour with
intermittent stirring.
• To the soil water suspension in the beaker, the electrode
was immersed and pH value was determined from the
automatic display of the pH meter.
