Environmental stewards program and River Restoration Program - Michael Rendon...rshimoda2014
The health of American rivers is essential to the communities and environments that depend on the beneficial ecosystem services provided. Historic impacts from mining, dams, and a variety of land use practices have left many river environments and riverside communities with a legacy of polluted waterways, erosion, and habitat degradation. With an increasing need to address river health it is essential to engage young adults in this work to conserve and preserve these resources for the future. Through emerging opportunities, young adults can learn skills, gain understanding, and physically work to restore and protect river systems. Programs- like those of the Southwest Conservation Corps- are working with partners to engage this population in various ways, providing much needed job training and education through stewardship.
Michael Rendon will present on Southwest Conservation Corp’s Environmental Stewards program, highlighting past successes and engagement models for DOI Bureaus and non-profits interested in obtaining a Steward. Showcased will be Inyo County’s work on the Lower Owens River Project, along with a Sturgeon habitat restoration project with the USGS Great Lakes Science Center that was nominated for the 2013 Secretary of the Interior Partners in Conservation Award.
Mike Wight will discuss collaborative work with corps programs and partnerships furthering multi-year, watershed-length habitat restoration initiatives on major tributaries in the Colorado River Basin. Word crews and interns provide much of the hands-on restoration implementation within these initiatives after completing comprehensive training.
In all three of these programs, participants foster a respect for river systems while gaining valuable work experience and building resumes for future conservation careers.
The Southwest Conservation Corps empowers individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment.

Small Farm Resource Centers: Antiquated or Adaptable?Andrea Bohn
The Small Farm Resource Center (SFRC) is a research-extension tool that coordinates trials at a central site, as well on the fields of individual farmers, with the purpose of evaluating, within the community, ideas that have been proven elsewhere. Any new ideas, techniques, crops, or new varieties of a local crop may first be evaluated at the SFRC and promising ideas extended to local farmers with little risk. This adaptive research is done directly by the non-governmental agency (typically missions
organizations and other small institutions) and local farmers and extended to the community.

Editor's Notes
Introductions of everyone in room.
Our objectives in this session are to broaden your perspective on volunteerism and its impact on your job search and professional development, to learn more by considering philanthropy in a conversational format, to help you ask the right questions, and to equip you with helpful resources if you decide to get involved with a volunteer cause.
So, to start, I’d like to get your take. In your own words, what is philanthropy?
In plain language, philanthropy is the voluntary effort to better humankind.
So, together as a group, let’s name a few philanthropic organizations.
Maybe the idea is to start an action, like to encourage women to have a mammogram. Or perhaps the idea is to stop an action, like an effort to stop bullying in schools.
What are some other worthwhile causes?
So, the organization is basically a vehicle for the donor to make an impact on his chosen cause. You might decide that the cause of cancer research is important to you because a loved one suffered from cancer. Or you might decide to get involved in a cause like education if you have school-aged children. So, based on your beliefs, values, and experiences, you may feel connected to a given cause.
However, once you choose a cause, there may be many organizations that you could give your time to. So, it’s important to choose wisely when deciding to work with an organization. Typically, volunteers and donors will feel more confident in an organization that is fiscally responsible and financially stable. You can review the tax return—called a 990 for non-profits—to see exactly how the money is spent. Does most of the organization’s money go toward fulfilling the mission?
For me, at Junior Achievement, as a staff member, I view myself as subordinate to my board of directors. They have a vision and passion for our work, and I see myself as the workhorse to make sure their goals are carried out. I’m curious to hear from Darlyne and Barry about their views on their relationship with their donors and board of directors, and how they work together to make change happen.
Volunteering for an organization may not necessarily be causal to employment, but it’s definitely corollary. Perhaps the same personality traits that make a person more inclined to volunteer their time and resources also make them more employable.
It is undeniable that volunteering provides a person with access to resources, skills, and relationships they might not otherwise gain. I’m curious to know from our non-profit representatives, what do you think is a benefit of volunteering in your organization that would benefit a person in his or her job search?
-Networks and connections
-Skills, education, and training
-Creates a positive impression of the individual
What if you’re already employed, or what happens once you find employment? Volunteering your time makes you a better employer, and odds are, the company you work for may already encourage you to volunteer for a cause they sponsor.
Ask Matthew Thomas for his input, as a professional development coach at Messer.
If you are pursuing employment with specific companies, have you thought about finding out which non-profit organizations or causes they are sponsoring or supporting? Getting involved with those causes may create an efficient volunteer experience that can carry you through your job search and into employment.
What else might motivate a person to want to volunteer their time or donate money to an organization?
These resources may change over the course of time. Who in the room has young children at home? Is anyone here going to school? Would anyone here consider themselves somewhat new in their career? Who in the room has more than 10 years of experience in their career field?
So, for example, early in your career, you may have a lot of time, but not much money. As you grow in your career and perhaps add to your family, you may have more money or expertise to lend to a cause, but less time.
Who is already volunteering their time to a cause?
What happens when your resources change because you become employed or your children grow? What if you decide to go back to school for an additional degree?
Could your volunteer time with a given organization sustain some of these changes? The answer may be “no,” if you burnout after some amount of time. However, with some organizations, especially if you are really passionate about the cause, you may find that you are able to continue your participation in different ways throughout your life, despite major changes in circumstances.
The organization you volunteer with or donate to will expect certain things of you as a constituent.
Time – Be present. Whether you are volunteering in a mission-related capacity, or doing fundraising for the organization, give of your time.
Talent – This could include skills you have learned through your education, through a trade, or even that you have taught yourself.
Treasure – Money. Non-profits cannot exist without donations. This could be a variety of ways, including a direct individual gift, or through participation in fundraising events. It could also include your assistance in gaining access to grants or foundation funds, if this happens to be an area where you have access and expertise.
Participation – If you can’t be involved in the mission, then be involved with the fundraising events and efforts.
Vision – You should feel a connection to some part of the mission or cause.
Represent the organization – Be careful for conflicts of interest that could taint your participation. Speak positively of the organization to others and highlight the activities in a positive light.
Be an ambassador – Always be recruiting the time, talent, and treasure of others when you think it might be a good fit.
These resources can help you find events as well as research various philanthropic organizations. You can check out their financial strength and see how they’ve spent their money.
