The standard Interaction Flow Modeling Language (IFML) is designed for expressing the content, user interaction and control behaviour of the front-end of software applications.
The Interaction Flow Modeling Language has been adopted as a standard by OMG in March 2013. The standard Interaction Flow Modeling Language is designed for expressing the content, user interaction and control behaviour of the front-end of applications belonging to the following domains:
Traditional, HTML+HTTP based Web applications.
Rich Internet Applications, as supported by the forthcoming HTML 5 standard.
Mobile applications.
Client-server applications.
Desktop applications.
Embedded Human Machine Interfaces for control applications.
Multichannel and context-aware applications.
It's worth noting that IFML does not cover the modeling of the presentation issues (e.g., layout, stlye and look&feel) of an application front-end and does not cater for the specification of bi-dimensional and tri-dimensional computer based graphics, videogames, and other highly interactive applications.
According to the IFML definitions, an IFML diagram consists of one or more top-level view containers, representing UI windows or Web pages. A view container can contain view components, which denote the publication of content or interface elements for data entry (e.g., input forms). A view component can have input and output parameters. A view container and a view component can be associated with events, to denote that they support the user's interaction.

This tutorial focuses on the Domain-specific Language (DSL) called IFML, which has been adopted as a standard by OMG in March 2013. The Interaction Flow Modeling Language (IFML) is designed for expressing content, user interaction and control behaviour of the front-end of software applications, as well as the binding to the persistence and business logic layers. IFML is the missing piece for modeling the front end of software applications and perfectly complements other modeling dimensions in broad system modeling projects. Therefore, IFML works best when integrated with other modeling languages in the MDA suite, such as UML and BPMN. This tutorial illustrates the basic concepts of IFML, presents the design best practices and integration with other modelling languages, and discusses some industrial experiences (also featuring quantitative measures of productivity) achieved by the companion tool WebRatio. At the end of the tutorial, attendees will get a general knowledge about IFML (they will be able to design simple models and to derive models from existing interfaces), will be able to associate front-end design with system modelling at large, will see the associated MDE tool WebRatio at work, and will get a glimpse of real-life industrial applications developed for large enterprises. This will let them appreciate the advantages of a model-driven development approach at work within large-scale industrial project.
The tutorial is aimed at both industrial and academic attendees, including Ph.D. students. Prerequisite for attending the tutorial is a general knowledge about the bases of model-driven development, software engineering, and some general purpose modelling languages like UML.

EU projects MODAClouds and JUNIPER – Writing and testing transformations from...Marcos Almeida
Softeam is a France based medium sized company, with more than 20 years of experience in Model Driven Engineering (MDE) solutions, consulting, training. Moreover, is is, and since 1994, a voter in the Object Management Group, in which it takes part of the standardization of languages such as UML and SysML. Softeam also has an active participation in EU research projects such as X and Y. Moreover it currently takes part of the EU projects MODAClouds and JUNIPER which intend to simplify the development of cloud internet applications by the use of MDE approaches and tools.
The core of the MDE approach consists in having models play an important role in the development. Series of model transformations iteratively bring high abstract model to reality by semi-automatically generating more detailed and low level models that are then, in the end of the process, transformed into running code. In both the MODAClouds and JUNIPER, Softeam is involved in producing transformations that map abstract domain models of web applications into specific database tools. Such transformations are not trivial because they involve models that follow different representation paradigms. An industrial quality approach is then necessary not only for writing such transformation but for making sure that the written code is correct.
In this talk, we are going to describe our initial experience on writing and testing our transformations from abstract object oriented domain models into JPA annotated Java classes. The Java Persistence API (JPA) was designed to annotate Java classes with pieces of information that help a persistence engine to map them into relational databases. The complexity involved in such transformation lead us to develop an architecture that allowed for its easy unit testing. The main topic of this talk will therefore be this architecture and the tools that allowed us to write and test this transformation.

Migrating MVC to theFront-end usingBackbone JS.
Planbox is a single-page web application for Agile project management. It was built using the traditional MVC stack with CodeIgniter (PHP) and jQuery (Javascript). AJAX was heavily used to update DOM elements to offer a dynamic user experience. UX logic code quickly became spread across Javascript and PHP. The application code base quickly became unmanageable and scaling functionality became difficult. Things had to change.
A decision was made to change architecture: bring all the UX logic in the front-end, and turn the back-end into an engine in charge of business logic.
This talk is about this experience. How we moved the MVC stack from the back-end to the front-end. How we used Backbone JS as the foundation of our front-end framework and built on top. How the backend became a black-box with a Restful API. What lessons we learned, what benefits we gained, and what reflections we made about the future of MVC in Javascript.

How can AI help software consultants (and what you need to keep in mind if we are open to that, especially when it comes to issues like hallucination, code vulnerabilities or ethical risks).
There is an increasing demand for embedding intelligence in software systems as part of its core set of features both in the front-end (e.g. conversational user interfaces) and back-end (e.g. prediction services). This combination is usually referred to as AI-enhanced software or, simply, smart software.
The development of smart software poses new engineering challenges, as now we need to deal with the engineering of the “traditional” components, the engineering of the “AI” ones but also of the interaction between both types that need to co-exist and collaborate.
In this talk we'll see how modeling can help tame the complexity of engineering smart software by enabling software engineers specify and generate smart software systems starting from higher-level and platform-independent modeling primitives.
But, unavoidably, these models will be more diverse and complex than our usual ones. Don't despair, we'll also see how some of these same AI techniques that are making our modeling life challenging can be turned into allies and be transformed into modeling assistants to tackle the engineering of smart software with a new breed of smart modeling tools.

Software modeling started as a paradigm to help developers build better software faster by enabling them to specify, reason and manipulate software systems at a higher-abstraction level while ignoring irrelevant low-level technical details. But this same principle manifests in any other domain that has to deal with complex systems, software-based or not. We argue that bringing to other engineering and scientific fields, our modeling expertise is a win–win opportunity where we can all learn from each other as we all model, but in complementary ways. Nevertheless, to fully unleash the benefits of this collaboration, we must go beyond individual efforts trying to adapt single techniques from one field to another. It requires a deeper reformulation of modeling as a whole. It is time for modeling to become an independent discipline where all fields of knowledge can contribute and benefit from.

In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.

The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
