Matthew 1-2 describes the genealogy and birth of Jesus. It begins with Jesus' genealogy tracing his lineage back to Abraham and King David. It notes that Jesus' lineage contains several gentile women and stories of deceit. The chapter then describes how Mary was found to be pregnant by the Holy Spirit before she lived with Joseph. An angel visits Joseph in a dream and tells him to not be afraid to take Mary as his wife, as the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. Jesus is born in Bethlehem and is called both Jesus, meaning "God saves", and Emmanuel, meaning "God with us".
