The document provides commentary on the beginning of Matthew's gospel. It summarizes Matthew 1, noting that it contains Jesus's genealogy tracing his lineage back to Abraham and David. It highlights some of the women included in Jesus's bloodline, including Tamar and Rahab. It discusses how Matthew presents Jesus as the Jewish Messiah and son of David. The document then summarizes the story of Joseph discovering Mary is pregnant and considering divorcing her secretly, before an angel appears to Joseph in a dream telling him the child was conceived by the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 1:3 says "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places..." But, what are these blessings and what does it mean?

3. We Will Leap Ahead To The Christmas
Story In Matthew 1
4. • However, The Christmas Story starts
earlier than you might have guessed
5. The Christmas Story Starts Before The
Foundation Of The World creationmoments.Com
• Ephesians 1:3-4 "Blessed [be] the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in
heavenly [places] in Christ: according as he hath chosen us in
him before the foundation of the world, that we should be
holy and without blame before him in love."
• The story of Christmas begins with the beginning of the work
of the Son of God. And His first work is recorded in Genesis
chapter 1. The story of His love for us that led Him to give up
the glory, beauty and perfection of heaven to come to our
dirty, dusty, pain-filled world begins not in Bethlehem, or in
the Old Testament prophets. We must go to the beginning of
His story lest His birth become simply the beginning of
another story of a tragic and misunderstood life…
6. The Christmas Story Starts Before The
Foundation Of The World creationmoments.Com
• The cross of Golgotha stands firmly planted in Genesis chapter 1.
Even before the creation, Christ's pain and suffering on that
coarse structure was anticipated. Ephesians 1:4 reveals that even
before the foundation of the world God's plan of salvation was
already in place.
• Even the coarse Roman soldiers knew that His robe could not be
cut into pieces without destroying it. Likewise, the Bible is one
complete piece – woven of one thread. Cutting out anything
leaves the whole thing to unravel. To remove the beginning of
the story of the Word and His work in Genesis is to remove the
foundation on which His work of salvation stands.
• Yes, the Christmas story is far more than the story of the birth of
an important baby. It is the center of the story of creation itself!
7. Since We Just Studied Gen 1, We Will
Leap Ahead To The Christmas Story
• The Book of Matthew is very, very Jewish;
• Matthew 1:1 The record of the genealogy of
Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son
of Abraham:
• Matthew 22:42 "What do you think about the
Christ, whose son is He?" They said to Him,
"The son of David."
8. The Book of Matthew is Jewish
• The Book of Matthew is very, very Jewish
• All 4 Gospels quote the OT extensively to
show the prophecies of Jesus and His
fulfillment of them. However, Matthew quotes
the OT more than any of the others, and adds
an additional 9 proof texts, not quoted by the
others.
• Matthew’s genealogy stops at Abraham, the
most important patriarch to the Jews
10. 4 Gospels= 4 Emphases Of Christ
• Matthew is Jewish, Jesus the Messiah, the son of
David, the son of Abraham
• Mark presents a servant, no genealogy
• Luke presents His humanity, genealogy goes to…
• Luke 3:38…the son of Adam, the son of God.
• John presents His deity, genealogy goes to…
• John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the
Word was with God, and the Word was God.
11. Gospels = 4 Views
• Human, Luke
• Deity in John
Lion of Judah,
Matthew Servant in Mark
12. Where Are We?
• We have leapt from 1900 BC to 4-7 BC
• Across the Old Testament , and the 450 “Silent
Years” to the New Testament, “to a city in
Galilee called Nazareth” (Luke 1:26), and
we’ve landed in the…
• Matthew, one of the..
• "Synoptic Gospels"
13. Dr. Thomas L. Constable says,
• “The synoptic problem is intrinsic to all study of the
Gospels, especially the first three. ("Gospel" capitalized in
these notes refers to a book of the Bible whereas "gospel"
not capitalized refers to the good news, the gospel
message.) The word "synoptic" comes from two Greek
words, syn and opsesthai, meaning, "to see together."
Essentially the synoptic problem involves all the difficulties
that arise because of the similarities and differences
between the Gospel accounts. Matthew, Mark, and Luke
have received the title "Synoptic Gospels" because they
present the life and ministry of Jesus Christ similarly. The
content and purpose of John's Gospel are sufficiently
distinct to put it in a class by itself. It is not one of the so-
called Synoptic Gospels.”
17. Matthew 1:1-17
• Matthew 1:1-17 is an Old Testament Bible Survey.
• We left off at Gen 38 and pick it up here at verse;
Matthew 1:1-3
• Matthew 1:1 The record of the genealogy of
Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of
Abraham: 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of
Judah and his brothers.
• These 5 we have just studied, the rest, not yet.
18. Matthew 1:1 The Record Of The
Genealogy Of Jesus
• Matthew 1:1 The record of [Βίβλος γενέσεως, I bet in
Heb. It would be toledot] the genealogy of Jesus the
Messiah, the son of David…and Jacob the
father of Judah and his brothers.
• Judah? What about “Reuben, Jacob's
firstborn, then Simeon and Levi…” Genesis
35:23
• Reuben, Simeon and Levi were all disqualified
from the rights of the firstborn
19. Judah?, Why This Sordid Story?
• Genesis 38:24…Judah was informed, "Your daughter-in-law
Tamar has played the harlot…
• 28 Moreover, it took place while she was giving birth, one
put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet
thread on his hand, saying, "This one came out first." 29 But
it came about as he drew back his hand, that behold, his
brother came out. Then she said, "What a breach you have
made for yourself!" So he was named Perez…
• Matthew 1:3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by
Tamar, Perez was the father of Hezron...
• Yes, Tamar was the daughter in law of Judah’s firstborn son
Er. Judah begat Er by a Canaanite woman (gentile) named
Shua. Tamar is named in the genealogy of Jesus!
20. Women In The Bloodline Of The
Messiah
• 5 women (3 or 4 gentiles) named
• Matthew 1:3 Judah…father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar… [Ed
Hindson lists her as a gentile, pg. 12].
• Matthew 1:5 Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab [Jericho],
Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth [Moabitess], , and Obed the
father of Jesse. 6 Jesse was the father of David the king. David
was the father of Solomon by Bathsheba who had been the
wife of Uriah [the Hittite, Genesis 15:20]. [“the father of” 39X’s, not for Joseph?]
• Matthew 1:16 Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of
Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah.
• Lying, deceit, incest, indecent exposure, adultery, murder in
the bloodline of Christ, the Bible doesn’t hide anything, and
this is strong evidence of it’s non-human authorship.
22. Mat 1:16, Joseph Husband Of Mary
• Matthew 1:16…Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom
Jesus was born…
• Jesus was Joseph’s legal son, but not His natural,
physical son. We would say, step son, or adopted son.
• Thus, even though Jeconiah (Matthew 1:11) was in
Joseph’s lineage, Jesus still qualified to be King,
because Jeconiah isn’t in Mary’s lineage.
• Jeremiah 22:30 "Thus says the LORD, 'Write this man
down childless, A man who will not prosper in his days;
For no man of his descendants will prosper Sitting on
the throne of David Or ruling again in Judah.'"
24. Matthew 1:18, Strong’s “As Follows”
• Matthew 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as
follows
• <3779> οὕτω houto and οὕτως houtos
• Meaning: in this way, thus
• …Usage: even so(1), exactly(2), exactly*(1), follows(2),
in such a manner(1), in such a way(4), just(2), like
this(5),…this is how(1), this effect(1), this manner(4),

• Notes: [betrothed to Joseph]
• …2 The first stage of marriage in Jewish culture, usually
lasting for a year before the wedding night, more legal
than an engagement …
25. Matthew 1:18 Betrothed To Joseph
• Matthew 1:18…Mary
had been betrothed to
Joseph, before they
came together she was
found to be with child
by the Holy Spirit.
• Matthew is Jewish, not
much about Mary
• Luke 1:26-38
27. Matthew 1:19, A Righteous Man
• Matthew 1:19 And Joseph her husband, being
a righteous man …
• 1342 δίκαιος dikaios {dik'-ah-yos}
• Meaning: 1) righteous, observing divine laws
1a) in a wide sense, upright, righteous,
virtuous, keeping the commands of God…
28. Matthew 1:19, Send Her Away
• Matthew 1:19 And Joseph…not wanting to disgrace
her, planned to send her away secretly.
• Joseph planned on giving her a “certificate of divorce ”
• Deuteronomy 24:1 "When…he has found some
indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of
divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out from
his house,
• But Joseph wasn’t going to have her brought to the
gate of that city and stoned to death.
• Deuteronomy 22:24 then you shall bring them both out
to the gate of that city and you shall stone them to
death
30. Matthew 1:20, “In A Dream”
• Matthew 1:20 But when he had considered this,
behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a
dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be
afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child
who has been conceived in her is of the Holy
Spirit.
• This phrase “in a dream” occurs 5 X’s in these first
2 chapters of Matthew and only once more in the
whole book (Matthew 27:19).
• God is doing something very special!
31. Matthew 1:21, Call His Name Jesus
• Matthew 1:21 "She will bear a Son; and you shall call His
name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.“
• 2424 Ἰησοῦς Iesous {ee-ay-sooce'}
• Meaning: Jesus = "Jehovah is salvation" 1) Joshua was the
famous captain of the Israelites, Moses' successor 2)….3)
Jesus, the Son of God, the Saviour of mankind, God
incarnate 4) Jesus Barabbas was the captive robber whom
the Jews begged Pilate to release instead of Christ 5) Jesus,

salvation]

• 2 Timothy 1:10...God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior
• Titus 2:13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing
of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus,
• Titus 3:6…Jesus Christ our Savior,
• 2 Peter 1:1…our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:
34. Matthew 1:23, CALL HIS NAME
IMMANUEL
• Matthew 1:23 "BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE
WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY
SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL," which
translated means, "GOD WITH US.“
• 1694 Ἐμμανουήλ Emmanouel {em-man-oo-ale'}
• Meaning: Emmanuel = "God with us" 1) the title
applied to the Messiah, born of the virgin, Mt
1:23, Is. 7:14, because Jesus was God united with
man, and showed that God was dwelling with
man…
35. So What Is His Name?
• Matthew 1:21 “…you shall call His name Jesus, for
He will save His people from their sins.“
• Matthew 1:23 “…and they shall call His name
Immanuel," which translated means, "God with
us.“
• Isaiah 9:6 …And His name will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father,
Prince of Peace.
• Please note that it does not say that these would
“be His name”, but that these things would be
said about His name…
