2. WHAT IS MATTER?
Everything around us is made of matter.
Matter has 2 properties we can measure:
Mass of a substance is the quantity of
matter. We can measure mass in
kilograms.
The volume of a substance is the quantity
of space that it occupies. We measure
volume in litres.
The density of a substance is the
relationship between its mass and its
volume.
3. WHAT IS ENERGY?
Energy transforms matter. It is also
needed to perform and do activities. For
example, a plant uses energy from the
Sun to make food and grow.
We obtain energy from different sources:
Non-renewable energy sources, such as
oil, come from the Earth. Their supply is
limited and they cannot be replaced.
Renewable energy sources, such as the
Sun, will never run out.

5. Heat and temperature
Heat is a type of energy that is
transeferred from a hot substance
to a colder one.
We talk about temperature when we
measure how hot or cold a body is.
We measure temperature with a
device called a thermometer.
6. LIGHT
Light is a type of energy that is
emitted by luminous objects and
substances. We use our sense of
sight to percive it.
Because of light we can see the
shape, size and colour of things.
Light travels in straight lines from
the light source.
