This document presents the goals, vision, problems, and recommendations of the National Focus Group on Teaching of Mathematics in India. The main goals of mathematics education are to develop mathematical thinking and problem solving skills in students. The vision is for students to learn and enjoy mathematics, see it as part of their life experience, pose and solve meaningful problems, and for teachers to engage every student. Current problems include a fear of maths among students, a disappointing curriculum, crude assessment methods, and inadequate teacher preparation. Recommendations include shifting the focus from narrow to higher goals, engaging all students, changing assessment modes, and enriching teachers.
