The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament consists of 64 teams divided into four groups representing different regions. Within each group, teams are ranked 1 through 16 based on skill. The top seeds generally have the most success, with #1 seeds usually playing and defeating the #16 seeds in the first round based on the tournament bracket structure. Statistics from past tournaments from 2001-2011 show the top seeds tend to advance further and ultimately the championship winners predominantly come from the top three seeds.
