Creativity: core skill for inclusive AI-based learning
One of three presentations we did for the Canadian Network for Innovation in Education (CNIE) online 2021 conference.
A workshop to approach how to encourage creativity in the context of educational applications based on Artificial Intelligence (AI), which are personalising learning sequences adapted to each student’s competency level, learning style, and rhythm, and can adjust the physical environment to provide greatest comfort for learning. Smart learning spaces use accumulated data from each student as well as “big data” from all users to improve the accuracy of its choices. This can introduce a “digital bubble” that limits, shapes, and defines the space where the learner can grow and explore, produced when AI takes control of the student’s immediate learning zone. To benefit from AI-based personalisation, we need strategies for avoiding risks of isolation and cognitive bias; we need to create a hybrid learning environment that federates teachers, learners, and AI agents.
In this environment, creativity is not just a global competence. It is the core skill, needed in all types of lifelong learning scenarios, to meet the challenges of the SDG’s, including inclusion and equity. As educators we need to help learners to live in a world where intelligent non-human agents are commonplace. This means learning new ways of collaborating with each other and with machines. Faced with so much disruption from environmental, social, and technological challenges, we need to integrate notions of mediation, co-working and negotiation, and foster flexibility of response in a smart pedagogy that encourages creativity along with communication, digital culture, and collaborative problem-solving – a pedagogy that highlights the importance of surprise, inquiring minds, ethics, aesthetics, self-realization, motivation, joy, and other essentially human learning characteristics.

Given in May 2023 at AMBA Annual Conference in Sevilla, Spain, the title of this talk is: Generative AI and higher education - Key issues.
The talk began with an introduction to Generative AI, explaining its basis in machine learning and its ability to generate new content, such as text, images, and music, based on patterns it learns from data. I emphasized the transformative potential of this technology, particularly in the field of higher education and highlighted the heavy news on the topic.
The first key issue discussed was the potential of Generative AI to revolutionize teaching and learning processes. I highlighted how AI could personalize education by adapting to individual students' learning styles and pace, thereby improving engagement and outcomes. The use of AI in automating grading and providing instant feedback was also discussed, with the potential to free up time for educators to focus on more complex tasks.
The second key issue was the ethical implications of AI in education. Concerns were raised about data privacy, as AI systems require large amounts of data to function effectively. I also addressed the risk of AI systems perpetuating biases present in their training data, potentially leading to unfair outcomes for students.
The third key issue was the need for curriculum reform to prepare students for a future where AI plays a significant role. I argued for the inclusion of AI and data literacy in all curriculums, not just those related to technology or business. This would equip students with the skills needed to navigate and succeed in an AI-driven world.
The talk concluded with Q/A and a call to action for the Deans of business schools and universities worldwide. The speaker urged them to embrace the opportunities presented by Generative AI, while also addressing the ethical challenges it poses. They were encouraged to lead the way in integrating AI into their institutions, both as a tool for teaching and learning and as a subject of study in its own right.

Given in May 2023 at AMBA Annual Conference in Sevilla, Spain, the title of this talk is: Generative AI and higher education - Key issues.
The talk began with an introduction to Generative AI, explaining its basis in machine learning and its ability to generate new content, such as text, images, and music, based on patterns it learns from data. I emphasized the transformative potential of this technology, particularly in the field of higher education and highlighted the heavy news on the topic.
The first key issue discussed was the potential of Generative AI to revolutionize teaching and learning processes. I highlighted how AI could personalize education by adapting to individual students' learning styles and pace, thereby improving engagement and outcomes. The use of AI in automating grading and providing instant feedback was also discussed, with the potential to free up time for educators to focus on more complex tasks.
The second key issue was the ethical implications of AI in education. Concerns were raised about data privacy, as AI systems require large amounts of data to function effectively. I also addressed the risk of AI systems perpetuating biases present in their training data, potentially leading to unfair outcomes for students.
The third key issue was the need for curriculum reform to prepare students for a future where AI plays a significant role. I argued for the inclusion of AI and data literacy in all curriculums, not just those related to technology or business. This would equip students with the skills needed to navigate and succeed in an AI-driven world.
The talk concluded with Q/A and a call to action for the Deans of business schools and universities worldwide. The speaker urged them to embrace the opportunities presented by Generative AI, while also addressing the ethical challenges it poses. They were encouraged to lead the way in integrating AI into their institutions, both as a tool for teaching and learning and as a subject of study in its own right.

- 8. Google Slides can be a very useful tool in the classroom. It can help me as a teacher share new digital resources and tools to students, parents, and other professionals because of its ability to work collaboratively and tohert on different apps. By sharing and allowing others to edit on my slides I can show them new tools and apps while they can also do the same while we are both editing at the same time. Google Classroom helps promote curiosity and critical examination through all the different apps. For example, in this slideshow alone I have five tools I can add to my lesson plan to help students think critically about the content as well as work interactively with the content. Reflection
- 9. The benefits of using presentation platforms like google slides is the accessibility it has. Google slides can be worked on from any computer as long as you have your sign in information. It it also beneficial for group projects when one or more people are working on the project because they can both add their insights. A challenge could be that it could be distracting to students if they are using the platform to communicate rather than do work and if not everyone understands the technology aspect of it. Reflection
