What?
This journal is one of the first steps in our (CPD) Continued Professional Development journey to strengthen the
culture of action research for all of our staff. One of the many ways we as are sharing our findings with each
other at Quintin Kynaston, is through a publication of journals from a range of teaching and support staff
conducting long-term action research in and out of school.
CPD is also about sharing best practice; to consider ‘what works?’ and encourage staff to share collaboratively so that it has significant impact on professional practice, as well as the lives of our students here at QK.
‘What Works?’ is about making research available to our own staff, as well as with our local networks.
Why?
Teachers and support staff who engage in action research inevitably find it to be an empowering experience.
Using action research, what we actually mean is extrapolating any of the ways staff reflect on their practice
and improve it by self, peer and student evaluation. This will in many instances, require a disciplined process
of inquiry conducted by and for those taking the action. This will include bringing in and trying new ideas
identified from critical reading; selecting a focus, clarifying theories and analysing the results so that the researcher can take informed actions from what the quantitative and qualitative data reports.
How
As a group of staff that engage with action research, ?complete further degrees, or are in the process of
professional learning through inquiry, we are committed to using in-school research to improve our professional practice to become effective teachers.
‘What Works?’ is about communicating key findings and recommendations of research from our own practitioners, so that all staff recognise its relevance and importance for implementing a “research-proven” strategy to use with students. In our first edition, you will find a good range of questions, topics and action researchers who gain valid and reliable data as they develop efficacy.

Three trials of online peer study support took place at Australian and New Zealand universities in 2019, allowing students to help other students with study questions, on-demand. The trials were a global first at this scale, allowing students within the same institution to connect with each other on-demand, one-to-one, within a robust quality control system. The university programs were designed to enable course and institution-specific assistance to students, at their time of need, and alongside existing study support.
In the first public reporting on the online peer-to-peer trials, Mike Larsen spoke to delegates from the UK and Ireland at the EMEA Online Symposium 2020.

The institution is best on certain goals or principles which forms the basis of its operations, and they include promoting the quality of academics, ensuring that the number of undergraduates enrolling for its programs goes up, ensure new instructional technology rises, putting forward and strengthening the curriculum of its programs, building and maintaining a sustainable fiscal policy, enhancing diversity in the institution, and ensuring globalization, among others (University of Jamestown, 2012).

32. Most peer programs in analytics and data science provide little or no data on
admission and student outcomes needed to make benchmark comparisons.
Instead we rely on MBA programs, which provide data publicly as part of the
ranking process, for benchmarking our performance.
The MSA compares favorably to the top-5 highest ranked MBA programs with
similar cohort sizes:
the MSA out-performed the selected MBA programs on 11 of 13 key
performance metrics;
were the MSA ranked alongside MBA programs, the analysis suggests it
would fall in a range between 21 and 29;
5th consecutive year the MSA performed favorably to MBA programs of
similar cohort size in the 20-30 range of the U.S. News annual ranking.

35. Michael Rappa is the founding director of the Institute for
Advanced Analytics and a member of the faculty in the
Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State
University. As head of the Institute, he leads the nation’s first
Master of Science in Analytics as its principal architect. Before
joining NC State as Distinguished University Professor in 1998,
for nine years he was a professor at MIT. Appointed the inaugural
Goodnight Director in 2015, his current position is endowed and
named in honor of the University’s distinguished alumnus and
prominent American business leader Dr. James Goodnight.
