BOD Model
•BOD: is a measure of the decomposable organic matter.
•The biodegradable nature of organic matter is dependant on the type of wastewater,
concentration of microorganisms. Temperature and kinetic coefficients (decay rate).
Mass Loading
The total mass of a material discharged per unit time into a specific body of water. The mass
inputs depend on both the input flow and the input concentration.
Understanding of Point and Non Point
loading rate
A city with combined sewers extend over an area of 15 square miles.
Rainfall occurs on average every 77 hours with an average intensity
and duration of 0.055 inches/hour and 6.5 hours respectively. The
permeability of the city is such that the volumetric runoff coefficient
C = 0.6 and the average overflow total nitrogen concentration is 9
mg/L. The city treatment plant discharges 20 MGD with an effluent
concentration of 40 mg/L. It captures an average 20% of the runoff.
Compare the total nitrogen discharge from the combined sewer
overflows with that from the city wastewater treatment plant.
