There is no question that the media plays an important role in our political system. For most Americans, the mass media, particularly television, is the most important source of political information. Because of this, the news media has attracted significant attention from scholars of politics and communications, politicians and journalists themselves. Frequently, this attention has come in the form of criticisms of how the media presents the news. The media has been criticized for many possible forms of bias --ideological bias, selection bias and commercial bias. Among the specific criticisms of the press are that its coverage of the news is overly negative, lacking in substance, and driven by crisis.
Ideologically speaking, charges of liberal bias are probably the most frequently heard, but many liberals believe that news coverage contains a lot of conservative bias as well. Begin by reading the handout on evaluating the media from Brill’s Content. Brill's Content was a magazine devoted to reporting on the media, especially the news media. This article discusses how to be a critical consumer of news.

They possess a large amount of power when it comes to public perception. The main purpose of this book is to unfold the life journeys of purposeful heroes especially John Adams, a brilliant and fiercely independent person with a passion for American Revolution. The book brings out Adams as a key leader that contributed significantly to the birth of American Republican. It gives one of the many examples of passionate and goal oriented leaders that are worthy to follow. It gives an impression of courageous and sincere leader with the ability to rise above any form of circumstances with determination and eventual success. Reading the biography of John Adams teaches many lessons including the importance of balancing family responsibility and ambitious activities.
2. What are the key questions or dilemmas that the author is addressing?
One of the key issues raised by the author is the question of balancing two unrelated aspects of life. By addressing the Joys and enthusiasm of John Adams, we are enlightened on how one can succeed in his or her ambitions even with serious happenings in personal life. John Adams had several encounters over his lifetime comprising losing his child and several members of his family at infancy, losing his only surviving daughter to cancer, and, eventually losing his wife. Despite all this, he managed to build a joyful life for himself and nothing stopped him from going after his ambitions. Another issue is the difference between the early politics and modern politics which seems to contradict in the way they are handled. The books reveal the venomously and hatred in the early politics that cost Adam and Jefferson’s friendship for 11 years. This is hard to be applied today where modern politicians are so principled that the level of indifference if any is kept at a minimal level.
3. The methods used to answer the key questions are? In other words, the author’s conclusions are based on what type of research and/or data? The author supports his/her assertions with what evidence/examples? Are the examples effective? Why? Why not?
The conclusion of the author gives theoretical facts about the delusional people when it comes to the history of politics. He gives an example of the view of Trumbell’s ‘Declaration of Independence,' where Adams describes how people believed Trumbell’s view disregarding the sacrifices and difficulties that existent for years before and after signing the document.The author is very effective in defining this by giving Adams as an evidence of those people that are willing to take critical action through sacrifice to make a difference. It reminds the readers that it is not and it will never be easy to create something great over a short period and that all achievements come with a process.

In this lecture, we discussed the definition and history of communication rights as one element or dimension of communication policy, and used it to bring to life a subject—policy—that sometimes seems abstract and technical in nature.
In doing so, we noted the evolution from a “negative” rights view of communication rights, as expressed in Article 19 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, to the more “positive” definition of communication rights explained in the lecture content derived from the work of Marc Raboy (and Jeremy Shtern).
Remember that “negative” does not mean “bad” here nor “positive” good. “Negative” and “positive” rights—which are ways of thinking about all human rights, not just communication rights—are instead ways of characterizing the orientation of rights toward individuals and society. Negative rights are defined in terms of freedom
from
things, and positive rights in terms of freedom
to
have or do certain things. Both negative and positive rights derive their legitimacy from fundamental and universal consideration of what it means to be human and to be treat people as human beings.
In our case study at the end of the lecture, we then discussed how a “positive” approach to communication rights could help us better understand and perhaps act against cyberbullying.
In your paper, and in your own words, define “communication rights,” and then briefly explain the evolution from the negative to the positive rights approach to communication rights.
Once you have done that, and with reference to the cyberbullying pamphlet from the Canadian government attached to your lecture notes, demonstrate how a “positive” rights approach to communication rights can help us better understand and prevent cyberbullying. In other words, what are the limitations of approaching cyberbullying from a “negative” rights perspective, and what does a “positive” approach to communication rights do to help us understand and perhaps act against cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying is a problem in international communication that affects many, especially vulnerable teenagers, as illustrated in the case of the late Amanda Todd (from British Columbia).

In this lecture, we discussed the definition and history of communication rights as one element or dimension of communication policy, and used it to bring to life a subject—policy—that sometimes seems abstract and technical in nature.
In doing so, we noted the evolution from a “negative” rights view of communication rights, as expressed in Article 19 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, to the more “positive” definition of communication rights explained in the lecture content derived from the work of Marc Raboy (and Jeremy Shtern).
Remember that “negative” does not mean “bad” here nor “positive” good. “Negative” and “positive” rights—which are ways of thinking about all human rights, not just communication rights—are instead ways of characterizing the orientation of rights toward individuals and society. Negative rights are defined in terms of freedom
from
things, and positive rights in terms of freedom
to
have or do certain things. Both negative and positive rights derive their legitimacy from fundamental and universal consideration of what it means to be human and to be treat people as human beings.
In our case study at the end of the lecture, we then discussed how a “positive” approach to communication rights could help us better understand and perhaps act against cyberbullying.
In your paper, and in your own words, define “communication rights,” and then briefly explain the evolution from the negative to the positive rights approach to communication rights.
Once you have done that, and with reference to the cyberbullying pamphlet from the Canadian government attached to your lecture notes, demonstrate how a “positive” rights approach to communication rights can help us better understand and prevent cyberbullying. In other words, what are the limitations of approaching cyberbullying from a “negative” rights perspective, and what does a “positive” approach to communication rights do to help us understand and perhaps act against cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying is a problem in international communication that affects many, especially vulnerable teenagers, as illustrated in the case of the late Amanda Todd (from British Columbia).
You do not need to use the McPhail chapter here, as it is not directly relevant to this question. Rather, draw on the lecture notes and the podcast as your sources here.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
