The Maryland Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (MMATYC) held its winter meeting during a scheduled double session. President Lisa Feinman led the re-cap of MMATYC and AMATYC (American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges) news and events for 2018, followed by 2019 business. Updates on the various committees and the upcoming MMATYC 2019 Spring Conference at Wor-Wic Community College were covered, as well. Notes pages within the PowerPoint contain the minutes for the meeting.

Reported that the budget was discussed, AMATYC committee and Anet reports were given, Impact! and Impact! Live news was shared. All items to be detailed later in this meeting.
Dues paid today mean that person is in good standing (and can vote, be elected to office, etc.) through May 31st, 2020.
Three people paid today: Kathy Baranoski, Fawaz Roumani, and Scott Saunders.
This was given by Lisa since Tom could not attend the conference this time.
No report since Sarah was not in attendance and had not provided a report in advance of the meeting.
Lisa (Developmental Mathematics), Mike (Research in Mathematics Education for Two-Year Colleges) and Christine (Equity, Placement and Assessment) reported on the committees on which they are members and/or representing the Mid-Atlantic Region. Lisa memtioned that the committee’s position paper had been passed by the AMATYC Board, and so there was nothing new to report from that committee. Mike mentioned the latest research grant obtained by Megan Bright-Goodman for Project SLOPE; he also encouraged anyone attending the AMATYC conferences to go to the research report sessions that are usually held on Thursday evenings. Christine talked about the formation of the Equity Committee and its current work on their first position paper. The change in chair for the Placement and Assessment Committee was relayed, as well as the current work on that committee.
Everyone was encouraged to consider membership in an AMATYC committee that appeals to their interests by going to the AMATYC website and becoming (more) involved.
Christine reported for all of the ANets, including the position papers currently being worked on within each ANet. Of particular note was the adjuncts’ postion paper, which was approved at the November 2018 Delegate Assembly meeting, as well as by the AMATYC Board.
[Lisa explained that position statements are statements endorsed by AMATYC as items that are supported by the AMATYC organization. AMATYC believes they are important because they assist people needing support in presenting to their colleges on the topics covered in the position papers. She pointed out aht such statements are thoroughly vetted: approved by the committee/ANet members first, presented to the AMATYC members at the annual meeting, then voted on at the Delegate Assembly after an initial and a secondary reading (two year process at minimum), and finally approved by the AMATYC Board.]
Christine encouraged membership in any ANet that might be of interest.
Lisa reported on Impact! since Evan was unable to attend the meeting. She noted that the committee has changed the wording from “two-year college” to “in the first two years of college” to more accurately reflect the community college student body. She invited everyone to participate in the conversations on the Impact! Live social media sites.
Sarah Miller needed to step away from editing and producing the MMATYC Newsletter because of other professional duties/commitments. Brandie Biddy volunteered to discuss taking over the newsletter responsibilities with Sarah.
In Evan’s absence, Christine ran this election.
In Evan’s absence, Christine ran this election, as well.
Lisa ran unopposed. So, she was elected MMATYC President-Elect by acclamation. So, Evan will remain as MMATYC Past President.
There were possibly two slots available. Mike Long and Elizabeth Leavy submitted their names to be considered for alternates positions. Since there were two slots and two nominees, both were elected as Alternate Affiliate Delegates by acclamation.
Mike discussed the position statement and the reasons why MMATYC should adopt this position statement. There are four (4) Maryland colleges (Towson, Bowie, University of Baltimore, and UMBC) who are currently numbering their transitional (developmental level that is prerequisite/co-requisite with particular college level classes) courses using 100-level designations. At present, three of the four colleges are trying to remedy this somehow; but one has definitely stated that they will not change their current practice, refusing to renumber them even though the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) mandated that all pre-college level mathematics courses must be designated using numbers less than 100 to avoid any confusion or misrepresentation of a course’s content level. The problem with this is that 100-level courses are accepted as being college level in accordance with MHEC regulations. Since these courses are clearly not college-level classes, they need to be numbered using designations that are less than 100 (i.e. 0XX designations). This has been an issue when students take one of those classes and then try to take a college-level class at the community college; they do not realize (nor do they understand the reason why) such courses are not accepted as college level courses at the community colleges (examples by colleges were reported).
The actual statement in its current form is:
“At community colleges in the state of Maryland, mathematics courses numbered below 100, are designated as developmental mathematics course, or mathematics courses designed to reactivate prior mathematics knowledge or to sharpen existing mathematics skills. The Maryland Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (MMATYC) takes the position that all institutions of higher education in the state, public or private, should adhere to this same numbering system for designating developmental courses. This eliminates any confusion for students at Maryland’s higher education institutions given that mathematics courses numbered below 100 would all be developmental. In addition, students who transfer to community colleges from four year institutions with developmental courses numbered greater than 100, will not be confused as to why certain courses will not transfer as college level course. MMATYC encourages the Maryland Higher Education Commission to enforce such a policy, which it already has.”
This was adopted by unanimous vote.
Lisa reported on this since neither Mary Lou nor Lisa Timmons were able to attend today’s meeting. The format will be the reception and keynote address on Thursday afternoon/evening and then breakout sessions all day Friday. There is no official theme at this time; however, the keynote address will be concerned with the topic of OERs.
Please consider presenting at the May 2019 conference. Deadline for proposals is May 3, 2019. Also, please register by May 24 since registration for the conference will be closed after that date so that we will have an accurate account of who will be attending and can order the correct amount of food.
Thank you to Wor Wic for hosting the 2018 and 2019 conferences The 2020 and 2021 conferences will be jointly hosted by Mike Long (Howard CC) and Amber Rust (Anne Arundel CC) at the Laurel Center.
Lisa mentioned that she had conducted a survey asking people why they did not attend the 2018 spring conference at Wor Wic College. The overwhelming majority felt that the distance was too far for them to travel.
Lisa asked that colleges consider hosting the 2022 and 2023 MMATYC Spring Conferences. Preference will be given to colleges who do not charge the organization for rental of facility space (CCBC charged us $500 per day; they are the only college to have charged MMATYC rent for use of the facilities).
Please join (if you aren’t a member already) these organizations and get involved. Also, please spread the word about both MMATYC and AMATYC. Please consider presenting at these conferences.
