Martin Community College celebrated its 32nd Adult High School graduation on May 8, 2008. North Carolina District 8 Representative Edith D. Warren was the featured speaker. She encouraged graduates to strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives and to continue their education. MCC Foundation president Tyler Warren then presented scholarships to four outstanding graduates. The Basic Skills program at MCC offers classes free of charge to help individuals improve skills and earn a GED or diploma. Graduates from Martin, Bertie, and Washington counties were recognized.

MCC AHS Graduation Celebrated Commitment to Excellence
WILLIAMSTON, NC – On Thursday, May 8, 2008 Martin Community College (MCC) celebrated its 32nd
Adult High School graduation at the Martin County Auditorium on the campus of Williamston High
School.
North Carolina District 8 Representative Edith D. Warren served as the featured speaker. Currently
serving in her fifth term in the state’s House of Representatives, Warren is a retired educator with over
30 years’ experience as a public school teacher and administrator, as well as a part time community
college and university instructor.

to be outstanding in all that they do, not only
for themselves but for their community as
well. She encouraged everyone to continue
their education and to consider devoting
some of their time to public service and
volunteer work. She said that the legacy of
those that serve lasts longer than the legacy
of the wealthy, pointing out that money and
technology are important tools but without
action, those tools can’t solve the problems
of the world.
“In today’s world, commitment to lifetime and lifelong learning is important,” said Warren. “Excellence
means continuing to move forward – that is what you’ve chosen to do tonight.”

2. Following the graduation address, MCC
Foundation president Tyler Warren presented
scholarships to four outstanding graduates.

In addition to the individual scholarships he
presented, Warren also reminded all
graduates to take advantage of their free
MCC class “scholarship” funded by the MCC
Foundation.
The Basic Skills program at MCC is designed
to provide educational opportunities for
individuals 16 years of age or older who are
not in school and demonstrate a need to
improve their math, reading, English, and/or
life skills in order to further their education,
earn their GED (General Educational
Development) or Adult High School
Diploma, or to function effectively in society.
MCC offers these classes free of charge in
Martin, Bertie, and Washington Counties.
