UT ARLINGTON ROTARACT CLUB
INTERNATIONAL PROJECT: THE RED HAND DAY
Provided by: President Trang Nguyen and Vice-President Hannah Lee
Date: 05 March, 2015
Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30.
All Rotaract efforts begin at the local,
grassroots level, with members addressing
their communities’ physical and social
needs, while promoting international
understanding and peace through a
framework of friendship and service.
Every year, we learn about local and
international needs and aspire to fulfill them
with all of our capacity. This year, the Red
Hand Day was selected as our international
program to draw attention to the children
soldiers across the world. We decided to
expand the project through the partnerships
with our sister Rotaract clubs at UNT
(University of North Texas) and UTD
(University of Texas at Dallas).
UTD Rotaract hosted the project on its
campus on Tuesday, February 10, while
UNT started on Thursday, February 12.
UTA had the Red Hand Day on Wednesday,
February 11. The event was led by Hannah
Lee and supported by many other members
to achieve the original goal: collecting 300
red-hand prints across the three schools. Eventually, we gathered a total of 354 prints. It was meaningful
to see all of our officers and about 30 volunteers dedicated to this event while many students stopped by
and enthusiastically became involved.
At the end, we contacted the United Nations Association, in the South Central Region in Dallas, because
of their concerns about human rights and social injustices. Through the organization, all of the hand prints
will be transferred to the Child Protection Section of UNICEF. We are honored to have the partnership
with the UNA in this project and certainly looking forward to future programs.
We are also thankful for Ms. Rizabhel Milallos and her Le Pepin Company for the sponsorship. Without
her willingness to support and providing all of the materials to us, this project could not have been
conceived.
