BU Council Report
The focus of the April BU Council Meeting was advancement and the Binghamton University Foundation. These office both
deal with donations to the University. The meeting featured presentations by Jim Broschart and Shelia Doyle.
President Stenger gave a short report. Highlights are below:
- TedX at Binghamton had another successful year. Over 1000 people attended, and Ellen Stofan, NASA’s chief
scientist was a great highlight.
- The first annual Theater Alumni Conference was held this month, which brought great alumni back to campus to help
current theater students network and build skills to go into the world of theater.
- The University will be investing in the new year-round farmer’s market in Broome County. Stay tuned for more
information about this exciting initiative.
- Binghamton University will be tobacco free by August 1 of 2017 Please check your B-Line if you want to be
involved in the Tobacco Free Initiative! The University needs input from students, and if you don’t get involved now,
you may miss your chance to have a say in how this initiative is pursued next year. Please tell your constituents to
submit comments if they are interested.
Highlights from the Advancement and Foundation reports are below:
- The University has set funding goals that are higher than ever for this year, and we are set to meet all of them!
- Gifts from alumni and community members are essential to the success of Binghamton University. Major gifts
especially (gifts over $5,000) are essential, and the University is working on identifying and working with alumni and
community members to establish these gifts.
- The University has worked over the past several years to expand the Foundation and Advancement offices through
the addition of staff and resources, which has enabled these offices to be even more successful than they were in the
past.
- I highly encourage all seniors (and even freshmen, sophomores, and juniors) to donate to the University. Many of the
things that you enjoyed about Binghamton would not be possible without donors, and if you are able, a donation (no
matter how small) can go a long way. If everyone in the class of 2016 donated $5, it would be more than $13,000.
Please consider it if you are able.
My email is sglose1@binghamton.edu, and I welcome any comments, questions, and concerns you have about my report or
the duties of the BU Council.
The next BU Council meeting is May 13th.
