It is designed to equip Grade One pupils the
necessary reading skills to improve their
achievement in reading.
Likewise, it seeks to develop a training model
to enhance teachers’ competence in the
teaching of reading in the primary grades most
especially in Grade One.

The goal of this strategy in reading is to enable
grade one pupils to instill in their minds to
appreciate the songs and poems created for
Filipino children and eventually to
communicate in written and oral forms
through effective reading instruction.

27. How effective is the Marungko Approach?
This strategy is one of the most used approaches in
teaching reading.
According to a study, 30 Grade 1 pupils from a certain
elementary school here in the Philippines were tested using
this approach, the post-test results showed significant
improvement in them. From 14 non-readers, it was downed to
zero. Among seven slow readers, only five remained. From
three moderate readers, they increased to 12 and from fast
readers, they became thirteen. Through the results, the
effectiveness of Marungko Approach in teaching reading was
proven.
