This document is a thesis prepared by Francine T. Price for a master's degree in history from American Public University. The thesis examines John Wycliffe, Martin Luther, and William Tyndale as "Martyrs of the Reformation" who risked their lives to translate the Bible into the common languages of the people. It provides background on religious movements and reasons for reform. The thesis will analyze the late medieval Catholic Church, the printing press, and the lives and contributions of the three reformers in advancing vernacular Bible translations. It aims to understand why translating the Bible threatened the Catholic Church's power and led to the reformers being considered heretics.
