Presentation by Mark Rittman, Technical Director, Rittman Mead, on ODI 11g features that support enterprise deployment and usage. Delivered at BIWA Summit 2013, January 2013.
Oracle Data Integrator 12c is a powerful ELT tool with the ability to target different environments. It might be the traditional Development, Test and Production environments but there can be much more. Having a good release process is therefore important to ensure ongoing development doesn't impact the code running in production and that we can always go back to a previous version of the code if something goes wrong. We also want to have different developers or teams working concurrently without impacting each other. All of this is now easier than before thanks to the new features introduced in ODI 12.2.1. After looking at different architectures we will review all these new features and see how we can have a robust and efficient development cycle.

Offload, Transform, and Present - the New World of Data IntegrationMichael Rainey
How much time and effort (and budget) do organizations spend moving data around the enterprise? Unfortunately, quite a lot. These days, ETL developers are tasked with performing the Extract (E) and Load (L), and spending less time on their craft, building Transformations (T). This changes in the new world of data integration. By offloading data from the RDBMS to Hadoop, with the ability to present it back to the relational database, data can be seamlessly integrated between different source and target systems. Transformations occur on data offloaded to Hadoop, using the latest ETL technologies, or in the target database, with a standard ETL-on-RDBMS tool. In this session, we’ll discuss how the new world of data integration will provide focus on transforming data into insightful information by simplifying the data movement process.

What’s new in Java today, and what’s coming to Java tomorrow? This session will review some of the recent enhancements made over the last year to the language and the platform, as well as offer a glimpse into some of the features in development that will continue to improve both developer productivity and program performance while retaining Java’s core values of readability, generality, and compatibility.
While computing devices have highly customisable user interfaces,
common configuration requirements such preferred input device,
language, font, text size or colour have to be repeated on each device
used. Cloud4All is an EU project that is working to create an open
public infrastructure which defines a personal profile to be used to
configure any device. The profile is stored in the cloud and retrieved
by the user whenever they encounter a new device. This will give a
consistent experience on personal and public devices, such as cash and
ticket machines. It has additional benefits for accessibility for
those with some form of impairment such as a disability or difficult
physical location such as bright lighting. The project is working on
defining the profile ontology and format, creating the cloud based
infrastructure and protoyping applications that respond to
profile-based configuration settings. Eventually developer tools will
be created to provide easy access.
OpenDirective are part of the Cloud4all project consortium and their
contribution includes the development of a prototype application. This
application, Maavis, provides ultra simple access to cloud and local
media or communications and is designed for use cases that include
older people and those with dementia or other disabilities. The
application is designed to adapt to specific user and platform
needs. This talk introduce the concepts of cloud4all and the impact it
will have on both cloud connected and offline computing devices.

A Reference Architecture to Enable Visibility and Traceability across the Ent...CollabNet
Software development should not be a “black box” to the business, customers or other developers. Instead collaboration across stakeholders should be the norm--business, development and operations teams. Forrester recently reported that 13% of organizations doing Agile link “upstream” agile planning with ‘“downstream” development.
As a result, executives continue to have only limited or no visibility beyond the initial planning stage of what is in a particular release. It’s not their fault, because today’s tools focus on upfront planning and don’t give you visibility into what’s happening in development. Often times that visibility is too late resulting in software that gets delivered and does not meet the customer’s needs.
Join CollabNet’s most experienced senior solution architects as they explain how you can you gain real time visibility into all stages of the development process—from ideation into production through deployment. Imagine what can your teams get done if all stakeholders are able to collaborate together and view real time feeds into all stages of the delivery pipelines within a single easy-to-use system.
Who Should attend:
Any executive or manager interested in learning how to get traceability and visibility across the enterprise-- particularly, into the build and release management functions of their application lifecycle.
What will be covered:
An enterprise-scalable reference architecture for CI, CD, and DevOps
The importance of build management, release management and application release automation integration
A blueprint for scaling business agility across a large development organization How does CollabNet help organizations solve these problems
A demonstration of TeamForge’s capabilities using Git/Gerrit, Code Review, Jenkins, Nexus, Artifactory, Chef and Automic

Always Be Deploying. How to make R great for machine learning in (not only) E...Wit Jakuczun
The presentation I delivered at WhyR 2019.
Abstract:
For many years software engineers have put enormous effort to develop best practices to deliver stable and maintainable software. How R users can benefit from this experience? I will try to answer this question going through several concepts and tools that are natural for software engineers but are often undervalued by R users.
I will start with a description of the deployment process because this is the ultimate step that exposes all weaknesses. You will learn about structuring R project, using abstractions to manage model’s features, automating models building process, optimizing the performance of the solution and the challenges of the deployment process itself.
The ever-changing IT industry requires DBA's to keep their skills up-to-date. This presentation discusses skills that any DBA should have, but also those that any DBA should obtain and nurture regardless of which new technology is entering the (Gartner) hype cycle. The first ever version of this deck was presented during Sangam18 under the title "(Oracle) DBA Skills to Have, to Obtain and to Nurture " and used in other occasions during 2019. This is the more generic 2019 edition of the presentation which includes an outlook for 2020!
The notion of platforms in business isn’t new—automakers and product makers realized the value some years ago, software developers adopted it, and most recently Amazon, Google, and Apple have built businesses around the concept. This webinar is your first step in moving from siloed product-oriented architectures to a modular approach that enables quick creation of new products on a platform of shared content, services, processes and partners. Like Wayne Gretzky, you’ll soon be “skating to where the puck is going.”

Integrating Application Security into a Software Development ProcessAchim D. Brucker
Static Code Analysis (SCA) is an important means for detecting software vulnerabilities at an early stage in the software development lifecycle. The wide-spread introducing static code analysis at a large software vendor is challenging. Besides the technical challenges, e.g., caused by the large number of software development projects, large number of used programming languages (e.g., ABAP, C, Objective-C, ...), the use of dynamic programming models such as HTML5/JavaScript, there are also many non-technical challenges, e.g, creating security awareness among the developers, organizing trainings, integration of static code analysis into the development and maintenance processes. In this talk, we report the experiences we made while introducing static code analysis at SAP AG.
Data2030 Summit MEA: Data Chaos to Data Culture March 2023Matt Turner
There is much more to becoming truly data driven and delivering the value of data investments. Overcoming the “Data Chaos” means making data accessible with data governance, creating a data culture, sharing knowledge through collaboration and data literacy to put data into action. This session will help enrich your data strategy and enable your organization to deliver data value.
Data2030 Summit Data Megatrends Turner Sept 2022.pptxMatt Turner
The next challenge in data is rapidly becoming clear: how can we scale data value and bring data driven decision making to everyone? We’ve made tremendous progress in bringing data together. The megatrends in data - data mesh, data fabric, modern data stack - are all about crossing the last mile to get data to everyone, not just the data experts. How can we empower everyone to better use data? Are the megatrends the road to actually scaling data value? And what does that mean for the data teams and data engineers creating systems and delivering dataops?
There is much more to becoming truly data driven. Overcoming the “Data Chaos” means democratizing knowledge through collaboration, promoting data literacy and building your data culture. The aim of this session is to help enrich your data strategy and enable your organization to make better use of your data assets.
Presentation at Data Innovation Summit 2021. Trusted, well managed data is key to AI and machine learning success. Data citizens need data insights and data scientists need to spend more time building models. Everyone wants to spend less time finding, discovering, and munging data and ensuring the data quality to deliver business results. However, traditional data approaches lock data away and slow AI implementation leaves much of this work on the data practitioner’s shoulders. This session will cover how AI is also helping solve these problems. New data tools that combine automation with human expertise are enabling data and knowledge sharing (including new data classes like IOT data), data democratization, and cloud migration. AI-driven data enablement ensures everyone can find the right data and make intelligent use of it. Join us for a lively discussion on the most critical resource for AI: your data.

Mark logic Industrialize Your Data IOT Berlin Sept 2019Matt Turner
Data is a big part of the Industry 4.0 conversation but it’s not often a topic in its own right. IOT devices and sensors are creating more data than ever, digital twins need accurate data to impact operations, and the digital thread requires integrated and accessible data. These concepts are all key to industrial organizations being able to improve their products and services, better navigate increasingly complex business environments, and transform for the future. And they all need data to succeed.
But getting value from all that data isn’t easy. Many traditional data approaches fall far short of being able to manage the complexity and variability of today’s industrial data and, critically, being able to make that data securely and operationally available.
This talk will focus on how leading industrial organizations like Airbus, Eaton, Siemens, Chevron and Boeing are tackling these challenges head on with a new, data-centric approach called the Data Hub. These organizations are “industrializing their data” – investing in data as an asset that’s as essential as the people, processes and materials powering it. With the Data Hub, their projects are creating efficiency, improving quality and safety, and enabling workers today while building a foundation of data across their organizations.
Join this session to learn how you too can industrialize your data and hear about the leaders delivering on the vision of Industry 4.0!
In 2012 BBC helped London present the most digital Olympic Experience to date. The data platform behind the online experience helped connect audiences to athletes and events and drive record number of live and catch-up streams. This platform and the results remain highly relevant to anyone working to connect audiences with content and is a benchmark for the next Olympics coming up in Tokyo 2020
Key to your company's success is being able to integrate and use the data you have. Linked Data holds the promise to deliver on this with semantic data hubs that don't strip context and enable you to use your data across your organization.
Smart Content Summit: Unlock the Value with the Right Data PatternMatt Turner
Smart Content as a strategy has been validated by the industry - collecting and managing all the data around the content is now a core activity to get the content to your fans and customers. Making it work is still hard and this talk looks at the successful projects from BBC, NBCU, ETC and Disney and examines the way they used NoSQL and semantics as well as the Operational Data Hub Pattern that puts this new technology into action ... and actually delivers Smart Content
As organizations grapple with ever increasing threats to security, the focus is shifting from just monitoring and protecting access. This approach protects the organization with a 'hard outer shell' or perimeter. With insider threats and complex, distributed work environments, media & entertainment organizations need to focus inside the shell and monitor access points to critical data within the organization and securing data. This session will review the latest security practices including cyber situational awareness and advances in data management that are enabling organizations to protect their data at the source while not crippling the critical role that access to data plays in the operations of today's entertainment organizations.
Media publishing meetup ocean of data july 2016Matt Turner
Slides from the New York Media/Publishing Meetup held on July 28th. The impact of the Ocean of data focusing on customer data and how to collect it an make an impact
Presented at Meatadata Madness in NYC March 2016. Metadata is more critical than ever and its impact is not just distribution but now extends across every area of the digital supply chain. Traditional methods of managing data with rows and columns create data that can't easily be shared and results in this critical data being in silos. Smart Content - a new approach using NoSQL and Semantics - enables this data to truly be shared across the supply chain including into production where valuable data is created but then lost in more organizations.
Metadata Madness: Semantics Takes Center StageMatt Turner
There is a big change happening right now in how we think about managing metadata and the impact it can have – including powering the top new app in the nation. Far from the afterthought of administrative tagging, metadata is now critical to the digital marketplaces and the effectiveness of digital products. Semantic metadata is a new approach that brings the flexibility necessary to capture the complete picture and to create and manage the new and ever-changing associations and relationships. This session will discuss the impact of semantics on metadata and demo it in action, revolutionizing what metadata can do for content.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
