Chris Markl
Social Entrepreneur in Residence
2014-2015 Annual Report
Accomplishments and Challenges
!
!
Overview: Over the past 9-months, I have developed programs that
!
• contribute to the Florida State University’s reputation as a national and local leader in
innovation and
• empower University stakeholders, primarily students, to leverage creativity, logic, and
data engage in innovation and entrepreneurship, and perhaps build sustaining
organizations.
!
My actions are driven by
!
• a personal assessment that Tallahassee’s startup community is underdeveloped as
compared to other cities, e.g. Austin, Boulder, and Gainesville;
• Brad Feld’s Boulder Thesis, which states a “startup community must have continual
activities that engage the entire entrepreneurial stack”, e.g. Startup Weekend or a
Startup Accelerator;
• an understanding that entrepreneurship and innovation in a University setting is an
educational experience that develops a student’s capacity; and a
• belief that University stakeholders can learn from local and national startup leaders.
!
The remainder of this document explains my accomplishments over the past 9-months,
challenges and future plans.

Challenges
!
The main challenge is coordinating across cross-campus stakeholders. The University
system is designed to work within rather than across academic units. Without authority to
compel actors across campus to engage each other, my efforts to create a social
entrepreneurship ecosystem is hampered. Other challenges include working with a
student population who has a low awareness of social entrepreneurship and innovation
and in a community with a limited social innovation ecosystem.
!
My plans to overcome this challenges include continuing to leverage resources within the
Honors, Scholars, and Fellows Building to further infuse social innovation into existing
programs. In addition, develop an interdisciplinary certificate in either social innovation
and entrepreneurship (and/or) innovation and entrepreneurship.
