A talk from the Work Track at AWE USA 2017 - the largest conference for AR+VR in Santa Clara, California May 31- June 2, 2017.
Mark Sage (AREA): Status of the AR in Enterprise Ecosystem and What Can We Do To Improve It
Many analysts predict that the Enterprise will be the biggest growth area for Augmented Reality (AR), yet the ecosystem still finds itself in the trough of disillusionment according to Gartner’s hype cycle model. Find out what the AREA (Augmented Reality for Enterprise Alliance) is doing to grow and educate the ecosystem and what you can do to help!

Editor's Notes
Hello everyone, my name is Mark Sage and I’m the Executive Director of the AREA.
The only global membership funded alliance, helping to accelerate the adoption of Enterprise Augmented Reality (AR) by creating a comprehensive ecosystem.
Its really exciting to be here at the AWE event, today I will talk about the current status of the Enterprise AR ecosystem and what the AREA and its members are doing to improve and increase its awareness
We all know that companies, to survive in a global economy, need to operate at peak performance as competition is fierce.
To survive, companies are looking to technology and business solutions to make a real, tangible difference and the use of Augmented Reality is one of many.
There are a number of key business problems that can be successfully solved by using Augmented Reality and I’m sure you will hear many of them over the duration of this conference.
I will outline a number of the generic benefits
AR can improve performance by:
Presenting only the latest, most relevant and contextual information and data when needed
Helping to reduce resource costs by enabling experts to be at the disposal of the entire workforce
Benefit from real time compliance by capturing, recording and certifying processes immediately
To support the increase in performance, companies are looking to become more efficient. To do MORE with LESS resources. AR can also support this objective
Lets look at some examples
Reducing time and improving the efficiency of infrequent and complex tasks
Preventing human error and miscalculation
And lowering the impact of task interruption and errors
The AR ecosystem is made up of a number of segments. Each are important and within the AREA we reflect what is happening in the ecosystem through our members.
E.g. we have a number of Enterprise members (Bosch, Boeing, Newport News etc)
So, there are benefits to be gained but still AR is not a “main stream” technology. There are still problems!
Why is this?
Well, the industry is still in its infancy, to use Gartner’s hype cycle model – AR is still in the trough of disillusionment
By talking to the AREA ENTERPRISE members, one of the problems is there is NOT enough information for executives to make confident and informed investment decisions to use AR. Or at least to go beyond pilot / smaller projects
From a AR provider prospective, its still difficult to find potential customers. At this stage customers have limited understanding of the benefits
Which means a lot of education to be done by provider which leads to difficult, drawn out and long sales cycle
So to summarise the situation, we are currently in (what I’m calling) an “irregular” ecosystem
The irregular ecosystem characteristics include:
There is uncertainty in the areas to invest
Providers unable to find customers
Technology readiness is unclear
Best use cases still being defined
Efficiencies difficult to achieve
Developing ecosystem
Clarity provided on best practice
Best tools for purpose
Language being shared
Greatest efficiency impact
Key business decision makers being involved
Maturing ecosystem
Working standards defined
Economy of scale
Mature solutions
Innovation slows
Small efficiencies gained
So ultimately, for AR to be successful we need a work together to create a comprehensive Ecosystem
There’s an African proverb often cited:
“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”
So what is the AREA doing to help create / support a comprehensive ecosystem?
Let explain who, what and why the AREA is needed
Read slide
Created for - innovative companies aspiring to invest in Augmented Reality (AR) technology
Who need - a better understanding of the tools available, application possibilities, methods of implementation and return on investment
And want - an opportunity to learn, co-innovate and build partnerships aspiring for the long term adoption of AR technology
The AREA provides - a free and open exchange of good practice, lessons learned and technological insights
Which ultimately will help…..
