2. MARINE TRANSPORT
• Able to move bulky commodities
• Relatively low cost per ton kilometre over a
long distance
• Slower than any other mode of transport.
3. MARITIME
• Maritime transport refers to the mode of transport in which
involve the transportation of people, goods, and services from one
place to another place through water bodies.
• There are two major type of marine transport which is inland water
transport which includes rivers, lakes and canals. Also there is
ocean transport which divided into major two categories which are
ocean shipping and overseas shipping. This is the oldest and
cheapest mode of transport.
• The development of maritime transport can be traced back since
3000 to 1500BC, during the Austronesian expansion. (Steve, 2008).
However, the development of maritime passed through various
period including ancient time, age of navigation, age of discovery,
submarine age, age of sail, age of steam, 20th century and the last
21st century
4. ADVANTAGES OF MARINE
TRANSPORT
• Handle large tonnage over long distance. this
mode of transport it help to transport large
tonnage and bulky commodities for a long
distance by using ships and other marine
transport instruments for example goods and
commodities can be transported from Europe
to Africa through ocean by using ships
5. • Less expensive. also marine transport is cheap
compere to other transport mode like road
transport and aviation mode of transport, this
mode of transport is very cheap in term of
transportation cost where by large amount of
can be transported from one place to another
at low cost not only that but also commodities
are transported for a long distance at low cost
ADVANTAGES OF MARINE TRANSPORT
6. Advantages cont...
• Creation of job opportunities, maritime
transport has created a lot of job
opportunities for several peoples for instance,
there are opportunities in ships buildings and
repair, freight forwarding, towage, pilotage,
marine insurance, banking, bonded
warehousing and cargo handling operations
and others.
7. • Promotes trade and commerce, Transportation helps
in supporting global trade.
This is supported by Egyptian ships trade as far as
Sumatra representing on the longest maritime routes
in Egypt. Marine like all transportation, is derived
demand that exist to support trade relationship. The
trade relationships are also influenced by the existing
maritime shipping capacity. Maritime transport is
promoting foreign trade since water transport plays an
important role in foreign trade. For example, in India its
trade depends on water along the oceans, Japan as
well depends on water transport to conduct trade to
other parts of the world along the Indian Ocean.

8. Disadvantages of maritime
transportation
• Affected and hindered by weather and
climate change, changing in precipitation can
affect shipping in many ways. Flooding can
close shipping channels and increased run off
from extreme precipitation even could cause
silt and debris to build up leading to shallow
and less accessible channels
9. • Unsuitable for small business, inland water
and transport by rivers and canals is not
suitable for small traders, it takes normally a
longer time to carry goods from one place to
another through this form of transport
Disadvantages of maritime
transportation
10. • Loss of biodiversity, marine transport
contributes to the extinction of both aquatic
and terrestrial flora and fauna during its
operation that is ports and ship construction.
In case of loss of aquatic biodiversity, the oil
spitted from ship get into water and
eventually polluting the habitats for fish
species and other types of species hence
leading to their extinction as they are unable
to survive under harmful conditions
Disadvantages of maritime
transportation
11. Railway Transport
• Railway transport refers to the mode of transport system in which
conveyance of passengers and goods, by way of wheeled vehicles
running on rails.
Also commonly refers to as train transport. (Brenna, 20180). The
development of railway transport in the world developed during
600 BC. The development of railway transport changing through
different phases. Among of the phases that contributed to
development of railway transport are ancient system, pre steam
(wooden rail), introduction of steam power, during introduction of
electric power, introduction of diesel power and lately the
introduction of high speed railway transport which use electricity.
(Brenna, 2018). However, in Tanganyika now day Tanzania this kind
of transport started to operate during the colonial era in 19th
century.
12.
13. Advantages of railway transport
• They handle a large tonnage of goods over
long distance/ long hauls
• It is possible to combine speed, traffic density
and safety in almost all weather.
It consumes less energy per km; the energy
consumption in transport is the useful traveled
distances of passages, goods or other type of
load (hoolhorst 2005). Rail is a relatively
energy efficient transport mode. Rail transport
uses far less energy per passenger kilometer
than road.
14. • It consumes less energy per km; the energy

Advantages of railway transport
15. • It conserves environment; rail transport is the
most transport which conserve environment
unlike other mode of transport like road this is
due to the fact that the movement of train
first reduce soil degradation because it
reduces friction with the soil because it moves
through the metal (track).
Advantages of railway transport
16. • Cheaper transport, it is a cheaper mode of
transport as compared to other mode of
transport. Most of the working experiences of
railways are in the intern of fixed costs. Every
increase in the railway traffic is followed by a
decrease in the average cost. Rail transport in
the use of labor also as one driver and one
guard are sufficient to carry much more load
than the road transport. Eg lories
Advantages of railway transport
17. Disadvantages of railways transport
• Does not provide door to door service; due to the fact
that rail way transport are too expensive on the railway
and traffic construction of rail way infrastructures
therefore it is not flexible to provide door to door
service as the requirement of the customers compared
to motor transport therefore cannot be used for short
distances for ample in turkey according to the statistics
in Final report of the TINA Turkey study state that “the
most important problem of rail way sector is lack of
railway lines capable of high quality and high speed
transport for connecting big cities which are densely
populated and economically developed”
18. Disadvantages of railways transport
• Time consuming, most of rail tracks have a lot of
corners which leads trains to travel from certain
station to another station within a long period of
time comparing to other transportation modes.
Example, a train from Kigoma station to Dodoma
station spends time approximately within two (2)
days to three (3) hours but a bus from Kigoma bus
station to Dodoma bus station spends time
approximately within twenty-four (24) hours due to
that railway transport wastes time
19. Marine transport
• For inland water ways capital must be spent
on improving natural water ways
• As well building canals/ ocean shipping
requiring large terminals and ports
20. Railway transport
• Friction must be reduced to minimum, this
allows the trains to move at the high speed.
• Even a light railway must be maintained to
high standards for safety.
