Marie of Romania was born Princess Marie of Edinburgh in the British royal family. She married Crown Prince Ferdinand of Romania and became queen upon his ascension to the throne. During World War I, Marie urged Ferdinand to ally with the Allies and declare war on Germany. When Bucharest was occupied, Marie and her family took refuge in Moldavia. After the war, Marie attended the Paris Peace Conference and campaigned for international recognition of enlarged Romania which had gained new territories.
