Marie of Edinburgh, also known as Queen Marie of Romania, was the last Queen of Romania as the wife of King Ferdinand I. Born into the British royal family, she married Ferdinand after refusing a proposal from her cousin, King George V of the United Kingdom. As Queen during World War I, Marie worked as a nurse in military hospitals, gaining the nickname "wounded mother". After her husband's death, the new King Carol II forced Marie into domestic exile at her homes in Balchik and Bran, removing her from political life. Marie spent her final years ill before dying at her Pelişor residence in 1938.
