Marie of Edinburgh was the last Queen of Romania as the wife of King Ferdinand I. Born into the British royal family, she was chosen in 1892 to be the future wife of Crown Prince Ferdinand of Romania. As Crown Princess and later Queen from 1914 until her death in 1938, Marie wielded significant influence over her weak-willed husband and was popular with the Romanian people. During World War I, she urged Romania to ally with the Allies and later cared for wounded soldiers after Bucharest was occupied. As Queen of Greater Romania after the war, she campaigned for international recognition of Romania's enlarged territory at the 1919 Paris Peace Conference.
