Marble is a metamorphic rock formed from limestone exposed to heat and pressure. Most marble forms at convergent plate boundaries or through contact metamorphism near magma bodies. In 2006, 46,400 tons of marble valued at $18.1 million was produced. Marble occurs in many colors and can be found worldwide, including locations like the US, China, Italy, and Pakistan. Pink marble used in structures like the Lincoln Memorial is exclusively found in Pickens County, Georgia.

Marble is a metamorphic rock.
It forms when limestone is exposed to the
heat and pressure of metamorphism. (Pohl 2011)

Most marble forms at convergent plate boundaries where large areas of
Earth's crust are exposed to regional metamorphism. Some marble
also forms by contact metamorphism when a hot magma body heats
adjacent limestone or dolostone. (Pohl 2011)

Marble comes in many different colors such
as rose, yellow green, red, blue-green,
purple brown pink, and semi translucent
(Mckee 2012).

Marble can be located all over the world in places like the
U.S, China, Romania, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Spain, and
Pakistan just to name a few (Mckee 2012).

Creations with marble began early on with the Cherokee
Indians. 1836 became the beginning of major marble
quarrying in Pickens County, Georgia.

large that by 1884 Georgia
Marble Company had been founded
earning 1.5 million dollars in

10. Georgia Marble Company
The Georgia Marble Company was
founded by Samuel Tate in 1884, after
purchasing a large amount of land locate
in North Georgia containing Marble.
The arrival of the railroad system allowed
the company to expand over the years. By 1924, it is reported
that over 1.8 million dollars worth of marble had been quarried
from Pickens County, Georgia. This marble can be seen
presently in the state capital building, Lenox Square Mall, and
buildings located at Emory University ( Butler 2014).

11. Rare Pink Marble
Pink marble is a very rare marble that can be
found exclusively in Pickens County, Georgia.
This marble is used to create the Lincoln
Memorial, and tombstones
for the U.S Military ( Mckee 2012).
