Julio Nakpil composed "Marangal na Dalit ng Katagalugan", the first Philippine National Anthem, at the request of Andres Bonifacio. Nakpil later married Gregoria de Jesus, the widow of Bonifacio. The anthem was also known as the Himno Nacional of 1896. While "Katagalugan" referred specifically to the Tagalog regions, Nakpil's original lyrics used "Sangkapuluan" indicating it referred to the whole country. This anthem could have become the official National Anthem instead of "Lupang Hinirang", but history took a different course.
