A combination of Bolman and Deal’s
Structural, Human Resource, and
Symbolic Frame.
Structural Frame:
- Simple Hierarchy - Director of
Enrollment Management and the
Associate Director of Retention
Services, 4 graduate assistants, 1
practicum student
- Works with other departments to
inform students of services provided
MAP-Works at Salem State
University
Human Resource Frame:
- Main objective of MAP-Works student
success and retention
- Assists in early identification of at-risk
students
- MAP-Works depends on faculty and staff
to utilize services for student
identification
- Office utilizes all the ‘employees’ to
promote, engage, and include students –
considers everyone part of the team
MAP-Works at Salem State

Symbolic Frame:
- Office formed around the belief early
intervention with an at-risk student
will prevent leaving institution
- Culture in office is to engage with
students, make students feel
comfortable, and give students the
tools necessary to succeed in college

Schein’s three levels of Culture can be
seen in the MAP-Works Office
Artifacts:
- The MAP-Works symbol is
everywhere
- MAP-Works paraphernalia is given
away as promotional advertisement
and reminders
- Seen everywhere around campus, is
well known

Espoused Values:
- Each person in the office believes the
theory behind MAP-Works – early
intervention will help guide student
to a successful college career
- Very enthusiastic when speaking to
students and explaining the benefits
of MAP-Works to students

increase the retention rates at the
