Plants need nutrients from the soil to grow, but soil can become deficient. Manure and fertilizers are added to soil to compensate for deficiencies. Manure is a natural fertilizer made from decomposed animal and plant waste. It improves soil properties but does not have high nutrient content. Fertilizers are manufactured products that provide nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to expedite plant growth. While fertilizers increase yields, overuse can harm soil microbes, increase greenhouse gases, and deplete other nutrients. Compared to fertilizers, manure is absorbed more slowly by plants but improves soil quality without harm.
