People living in this era must have had an experience of people bumping into each other, and just
walking away without apologizing. Some of them are in an urgent situation and we can tolerate that
there is no time to be polite but most of them, whatever they are doing, are not in a hurry. People are
usually able to judge whether the rude person was in a crucial situation. It's true that it gets really
frustrating to see the impolite person walk away like nothing happened when my feelings are hurt. It
is becoming certain that manners and courtesies are disappearing at a rapid speed.
Manners have been greatly valued and judged since the ancient times, but not anymore. People who
did not keep their ways to monarchs or even to high officials were often severely punished or
executed. Whenever I did something that was unmannerly, my parents punished me very harshly,
usually with a long stick that I brought home with me from camping. I always regretted that I
brought that stick home. Now, that I reflect on the things that I've done to my parents, I think they
made the right choice.

A rhetorical analysis shows how certain sentence and words are used. It explains how does it
persuade, entertain or inform a person. In our conversation, we had allusion which is a simple
reference to something. The person does not explain in details or to what it refers. It is just a
comment and should be able to spot the allusion and understand its importance in the context. It

I shall begin my story with an experience I encountered at the age of sixteen at our small town's
Latin school. The sweetness of many memories from that time still stirs and touches me with
melancholy: dark and well–lit alleys, houses and factories, faces and chimes, rooms affluent and
comfortable, snug and amenable, the whole town was pregnant with secrets.
The realms of day and night, two different universes coming from two opposite poles, mingled
during this time. My parents' home belonged to one realm. This realm was familiar to me in many

Fanny Trollope, an English novelist and writer, travelled to America in the early 19th century for a
glimpse of life outside of England. In her work, "The Domestic Manners of the Americans",
Trollope captured her experience in countless opinionated, highly critical observations that judged
Americans based on their behaviors and practices. Many aspects of American life captured
Trollope's attention, but these aspects were not seen in a positive light. It was obvious through her
story that Trollope did not care for the American life; however, there seemed to be much more to
Trollope's opinions besides petty distastes. Trollope found the American lifestyle repulsive because
it seemed to revolve around pride in their impolite and offensive behavior, creating an environment
of arrogance and superiority over outsiders like herself. In the beginning of her stay in America,
Trollope was enjoying a cup of tea in her hotel when she was abruptly confronted by the hotel's
landlord. He knocked on her door and demanded that Trollope leave, saying "I cannot accommodate
you on these terms; we have no family tea–drinkings here, and you must live either with me or my
wife, or not at all in my house" (Trollope 34). When Trollope tried to explain that she was a
foreigner and unaware of American customs, the landlord added "Our manners are very good
manners, and we don't wish any changes from England" (Trollope 34). The landlord's actions were
uncalled for in Trollope's opinion; his authority and pride seemed almost comical. He was so
adamant about control over the room, yet the room itself was certainly not anything noteworthy. The
room was described by Trollope as being subpar, as "it had no carpet, and was darkened by blinds of
paper" (Trollope 33). The landlord took great pride in American "manners" and seemed to think that
any English practices were inferior. Ironically, in other parts of her work, Trollope reported her

Amy Tan's short story, Fish Cheeks, outlines the general idea of self–acceptance. As the narrator,
fourteen year old Tan declares her love for her minister's son, Robert, who unlike herself, is "as
white as Mary in the manger" (Tan 1). This crush is anything but healthy, primarily because Tan is
reluctant to reveal her true self to him. This hesitance she portrays is strikingly recognizable in the
teenagers of today's world. Amy Tan 's story, "Fish Cheeks," is significant to the adolescents of
today 's society through the overall structure, quality, and applicability of the piece as the struggle to
accept oneself as an individual is still as present as it ever was.
As the story develops, the reader's thoughts are guided by the structure of the piece in a way that Tan
is able to share an important lesson through the form of a personal narrative. The opening text

In the past, it has been evident that the population of the Southern states had been composed of
many different social classes, particularly in the 1930s. In her novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper
Lee clearly depicts these social classes and illustrates how diverse they make the population of
Maycomb, a fictional town where the story takes place. The main character, a young girl named
Scout, does not fully understand the concept of these different social classes and often fails to
recognize which one she belongs to. As the story progresses, it becomes known to the reader that
Scout is part of the highest social class in Maycomb. However, because of the conditions she is

I intend to begin my story with an experience I encountered at the age of sixteen at our small town's
Latin school. The sweetness of many memories from that time still stirs and touches me with

The realms of day and night, two different universes coming from two opposite poles, mingled

The book The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, by John Boyne, explores the Holocaust from a child's
viewpoint, and also investigates different characters, personality, and beliefs. The characters Mother,
Father, and Bruno are not exclusively good or bad, but are a mixture of both. Mother is a polite
woman, who realises her husband's actions are immoral, but also hides an affair from her family.
Father contrasts this by being presented as bad due to his line of work, but ultimately loves and

Frances Trollope, displaying themes scattered throughout the book about the United States as seen
from a different perspective, from the eyes of a tourist. Frances Trollope resides from England, and
in 1827 she made the decision to embark on a journey to America, to see if it really was the land of
opportunity. She left with her three children and set off leaving her normal life, and her husband,
behind her. What she hoped to find in America was a new life, a new experience, and what she
found was a country that was struggling to see the incredible number of problems it held. Slavery,

National Culture

According to Greet Hofstade, "Culture is the collective programming of the mind distinguishing the
members of one group or category of people from others" (Hofstede, n.d.). It can be analysed from
the definition that, not all groups of people are same. People of different regions–nations have
different understanding and ways of doing things that differentiates them from the other. Thus, an
organization should try to adapt to the host country's culture to ensure success. Failure to do so
seizes the corporation from achieving its goals (Gudykunst, 2000).
Cultural difference is one of the major factors that affected the performance of Manners Europe.
Being a United States Corporation, Manners Europe's failure to adapt to Dutch culture led to its
inefficiency. The work ethics, management style, motivational tools used were more American in
nature than Dutch. The five dimensions model proposed by Hofstede is used to understand the
difference between the Dutch and the American culture.

Although all education is interrelated and can improve one's quality of life, it is up to him or her to
utilize the knowledge to improve their life in both Shaw's "Pygmalion" and Stoppard's "Arcadia,"
but differs in the motive seeking education, where one is to improve one's social class and life and
another is due to curiosity and fascination, respectively. In both texts, knowledge and education
advanced the character's life quality to a certain limit. In "Pygmalion," Eliza, a girl with no manners
who seemingly lives on the streets seeks education in the means of language and manners in order to
sell flowers at a flower shop. In "Arcadia," Thomasina, on the other hand, seeks education in the
pursuit of curiosity. Both texts depict knowledge as a passageway for a better life but then show that
it is how one utilizes the education and knowledge that determines one's quality and satisfaction
with life.
Education in "Pygmalion" is depicted as a stepping stone into a better life, but it is how one puts
one's knowledge to use that determines their satisfaction with life. The main message of
"Pygmalion" is appearances can be deceiving. Higgins, a high middle class man who studies
phonetics––the science of speech–– with a proper education, conveys a persona of being cold, stern,
proper, conventional, and intellectual. Eliza, on the other hand, grew up on the streets, which
