Subrata Dey (L&T- Kolkata)
1. I have no life. I am burned out and exhausted.
2. I don’t feel especially needed – not at work, not by my family,
neighbours and society. I am not making any difference.
3. I feel empty inside. My life lacks meaning. Something is missing,
I don’t know.
4. With a spouse who don’t understand, home is no better than
work.
5. I am stressed out; everything is urgent.
6. I am sick of backstabbing and politics at my work place.
7. No one really appreciates me and my boss has no clue about
my capabilities.
8. I can’t change things.
1. I don’t regularly get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep
and often wake up feeling tired.
2. I frequently skip breakfast or settle for something
that is not nutritious.
3. I don’t work out enough on regular basis.
(Jogging/brisk walking/swimming)
4. I don’t take regular breaks during the day to truly
renew or recharge myself. (a walk around the office for 5
minutes or moving to the balcony for fresh air etc)
1. I have difficulty focussing on one thing at a time and
easily distracted by mails during the day.
2. I spend too much time reacting to the immediate
crises and demands rather than focusing on activities
that have longer term value.
3. I don’t learn any new things apart from the job
demands (imposed on you due to the job itself) i.e. new
approach/theories/tool etc on monthly basis.
4. I don’t read/learn any new thing apart from professional
requirements i.e. novel, other subjects, game/music
instrument/ recipe etc on regular basis.
1. I frequently find myself feeling irritable, impatient, or
anxious at work especially when the work is demanding.
2. I don’t have enough time with my family and loved
ones, and when I’m with them, I’m not really always with
them.
3. I have too little time for the activities that I deeply
enjoy.
4. I don’t stop frequently enough to express my
appreciation for good work of my colleague or peers.
1. There is significant gap between what I say is most
important to me in my life and how I actually allocate
my time and energy.
2. My decisions at work are more often influenced by
external demands than by a strong, clear sense of my own
purpose.
3. I don’t take enough time for self reflection,
strategising or to savour my accomplishments and
blessings.
4. I don’t spend enough time and energy in making a
positive difference to others or society.

Do you have a Goal?
We are tuned to Goal Setting Theory from our Childhood.
Completion of school
Clearing Entrance Examination
College/University degree.
Higher Education
Finding the Suitable Job.
Goal Oriented Person vs Target Imposed by Company
To succeed in any area of your life, be it business,
personal or social, you must start with a goal.
It unifies your effort and energy, It gives meaning, direction
and purpose to all you do.
It gives the feeling that you are in control of your life.
Each attained targets, however small, sustains the energy
to focus on the goal.
Working toward goals will raise your self-esteem and self-
respect.
Accomplishing your goals gives a tremendous feeling of
personal pride and accomplishment.

One study of 44 Fortune 500 companies found that salespeople with
high EQ produced twice the revenue of those with average or below
average scores.
Another study of technical programmers demonstrates that the
top 10 percent of emotionally intelligent employees were developing
software three times faster than those with lower competency.
A Dallas corporation measured that the productivity difference
between their low scoring emotional intelligence employees and
their high scoring emotional intelligence employees was 20 times.

EQ-Abundance Mentality
•Interdependence occurs when there is co-operation, not competition,
in the workplace (or the home).
•Competition belongs to the marketplace or sports.
•People are conditioned to a win/lose mentality by school
examinations/athletics/competitions.
•Abraham Maslow called a “Feeling of Deficiency” – a sense that
something is being taken from them.
EQ-Abundance Mentality
By contrast Covey advocates an ‘Abundance Mentality’ that:
•Recognizes unlimited possibilities for positive growth &
development
•Celebrates success, recognizing that one person’s success is
not achieved at the expense, or to the exclusion of other.

Ignoring
Within One’s
Own Frame of

Within other’s
Frame of Reference
Most people do not listen with the intent to understand;
they listen with the intent to reply.
EQ-Listening Continuum
•Ignoring: Treating the communicating person with disrespect.
•Pretend Listening: The focus of attention is something else while it
appears that attention is being placed on what is being said.
•Selective Listening: Instead of hearing what is being said fully, there
is attention to what will be said in response.
•Attentive Listening: It is actively listening to the meaning of what is
being said so it can be given back to the person sharing.
•Emphatic Listening: Seeks to understand with heart
(emotions) and mind (thoughts) whether this requires action
or not.
We listen autobiographically and we tend to reply on basis of
our evaluation, probe, advise and interpretation.
EQ-Synergy
•The interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their combined
effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects.
•Valuing the differences is the essence of synergy – the mental, the
emotional, the psychological differences between people.
•The key to valuing the differences is to realize that all people see the
world, not as it is, but as they are.
•It is Team work, team building, development of unity and creativity
among people.

EMOTIONAL BANK ACCOUNT

EQ-Emotional Bank Account
Six Major Deposits
• Understanding the Individual: Seeking to understand the other
person is the most important deposit and key to every deposit.
• Attending to the little things: In relationship little things are big
things. Little discourtesies, impoliteness or disrespect make large
withdrawal.
• Keeping Commitments : Keeping promises are large deposit while
breaking a commitment or promise is a large withdrawal.
EQ-Emotional Bank Account
Six Major Deposits
• Clarifying Expectations: It takes a great deal of courage. It seems
easier to act as though differences don’t exist and to hope things
will work out on it’s own.
• Showing Personal Integrity: It generates trust and is the basis of
many different kind of deposits. Lack of integrity can undermine any
other effort.
• Apologizing sincerely when you make a withdrawal: Whenever, you
make a withdrawal, you have to apologize sincerely.

Integrity – Being true to one’s highest values, convictions and
conscience. It means you are integrated around principles and
natural laws that govern the consequence of our behavior.
“Walk the Talk”
The best way to develop integrity is to start small and to make
and keep promises. Avoid “marginal cost”. It is easier to keep a
promise 100% of times than 98%.
Meaning – Having a sense of contribution to the people and
causes.
Identify the “sweet spot” activities – those that give you the
feeling of effectiveness and fulfillment. Find ways to do
more of these and live your core values and conscience.
Voice – Aligning your work accordingly. Choose your work
accordingly. Develop the second career, if required.
