FORESTS AND WILD
LIFE
A large area of land on which trees and other
plants grow naturally is called a forest.
Total area of land under forest in India
- 23.81 %
Forests are ‘biodiversity hot
spots’
Biodiversity measure by – Number of species found
there.
- range of different life
forms present.
Conservation means- preserve the biodiversity we
have inherited
Loss of diversity may lead to loss of ecological
stability.

One of the main aim of the management
of forests and wildlife is to conserve the
biodiversity which we have inherited
because the loss of biodiversity leads to
the loss of ecological stability of the
forest ecosystem.
Forests :-
Importance of forests :-
i) Forests help to preserve biodiversity.
ii) Forests are natural habitats of plants and animals.
iii) Forests provide timber, wood, fuel, medicines, fodder, etc.
iv) Forests help to maintain ecological balance.
v) Forests help to control climate and rainfall.
vi) Forests help to prevent soil erosion and controls floods.
vii) Forests help to maintain the oxygen–carbon dioxide balance
in nature.
Forest Department of the
Government who owns the
forests and controls the
resources from the forests.
Industrialists who use the
raw materials from forests
for manufacturing paper,
medicines, furniture etc.
People who are
associated with
forests directly
or indirectly are
People living in
and around
forests depend on
forests for their
livelihood
Nature and wild life
organizations who want
to conserve and preserve
forests.
Stake holders
of forests
The people or tribes
Use resources in such a
way that much damage
is not done to the
environment
Collect
fodder and
graze their
forest
Most
depended
people on
forest.
They usually
lop the
branches of
the trees and
pluck their
leaves but do
not cut the
whole treeBamboo ,gather
fruits, nuts and
medicinal herbs
The forest
department
Destroy large amount of
biodiversity due to their
needs
Cut down forest trees for
timber for furniture
The development projects like
•Building roads
•Construction of dams
To plant trees for timber
Such as pine , teak and
eucalyptus
Forests are cleared of
all vegetation in a large
scale
Due to which
they
The industrialists go their
way…
Have major vested in
forest resources.
Forests are the source
of raw material for
their industry
Some industries based on forest produce:
•Timber Industry
•Paper mills
•Lac industry
•Sports equipment industry
Most of the deforestation
is caused by industrial
needs.
There are certain people
who are not dependent on
forest in any way but who
wants forests to be
conserved to prevent undue
damage to the environment
Bishnoi
community in
Rajasthan
The chipko
andolan
A group of
363 people
sacrificed their
lives
Led by Amrita
Devi Bishnoi
Protected the
Khejri Trees in
Kejrali Village
near Jodhpur
The govt. has recently
instituted an ‘Amrita Devi
Bishnoi National Award For
Wildlife Conservation’ in
memory of Amrita Devi
Bishnoi
Reni in Garhwal,
High up in the
Himalayas in the
early 1970’s
A logging contractor
had been allowed to
cut down the trees in
a forest close near
village.
The villagers reached
forest quickly and
clasped the tree trunk
with their arms
preventing the workers
cutting the trees. Thus
the trees were saved.
Two instances showing bravery
and love for forest by the local
people nearby forest
Silviculture and it’s
advantages
Silviculture is the practice of
controlling the establishment,
growth, composition, health, and
quality of forests to meet diverse
needs and values.
Produces a large quantity of raw
material for industrial purposes Prevents soil erosion
Prevents floods
Increases the area
of Earth under
forests
Maintains perfect water
cycle in nature
Conservation of forests :-
Forests can be conserved by :-
i) Afforestation – planting of more trees.
ii) Preventing or reducing deforestation.
iii) Preventing over grazing by cattle.
iv) By setting up wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, biosphere reserves etc.
v) Undertaking social forestry programs like Van Mahotsav, Chipko
movement for planting and protecting trees on a large scale.
WILDLIFE
The wild animals and birds which
live in forest are called wildlife.
Importance of wildlife
i) Wildlife helps to preserve biodiversity.
ii) Wildlife helps to maintain food chains and food web.
iii) We get useful products from wildlife like food, medicines,
leather, bones, honey, lac etc.
Conservation of wildlife
i) Preserving the natural habitats of animals.
ii) Banning poaching of animals.
iii) Protecting endangered species of animals.
iv) Setting up of wildlife sanctuaries, national parks, biosphere
reserves etc.

I was like this

And this is my
condition now…
Please save me
Let me be happy and then
only I can keep you happy
So please Act sensible and
wisely
May the coming generation
might understand me

So friends Lets save our earth and keep it beautiful for the coming generations …. So that they can enjoy what we had….
