Malin Kundang grew up poor with his mother in Sumatra. As a young man, he decided to leave on a ship to seek his fortune overseas. He never contacted his mother again. Years later, when his ship returned to port as a wealthy man, Malin denied knowing his mother when she tried to embrace him. Enraged by his denial and mistreatment of her, his mother cursed Malin to turn into stone. Her curse came true when a storm hit his ship and Malin was thrown onto shore, his body transforming into the stone known as Batu Malin Kundang, which remains on the coast of Sumatra to this day.

2. Once upon a time, on the West coast of Sumatra, there
was a boy named Malin Kundang.
He lived with his mother, they were very poor.
They earned money as a fisherman helper.
Malin Kundang grew up as a smart boy and he always
helped his mother.

3. One day Malin asked his mother,
“Mother, What if I sail over seas?, I cannot stay and
always be a poor man”
His mother didn’t agree but she had made up her mind.
“If you really want to go, I can’t stop you my son”.
On the next day, Malin was ready to go with a rich ship’s
crew.
“Mother, I have to leave now, take a good care!
His mother hugged him tight and said,
“It’s hard to let you go, God bless you my son!

4. It has been a year Malin left his mother
and never sent any news, but his mother kept
waiting and praying for her son.
Till someday his mother was shocked
there was a big ship arrived in the pier
where she usually waited for her son.

5. She was very surprised…. when
suddenly she saw the man was steping down
the leader along with a beautiful woman.
Malin’s mother could not be wrong, he
must be Malin, her son.

6. She came and ran to hug Malin:
”Malin, you’re back son, I miss you so much”
But, Malin was so angry,
“What!!. you’re not my mother, you just a poor women, just get
out here!!!”
And Malin’s wife said:
“Huhh, bad smelt….go..go..go!
She cried and cried when the bodyguard dragged and get her away.
“Malin….don’t you remember me, your mother, why do you treat
your mother like this?.....uuuu..uuuu(crying)

7. When she saw the ship was leaving the pier, while
crying she prayed to the God, “Dear God, if he is
not my son, let him have a nice voyage…., but
if he is, I cursed him become a stone”
The storm wrecked Malin’s ship fast. And Malin
cried up, “Somebody help..help..!”

8. Malin thrown out and felt on a small
island and his whole body turn into a stone.
He was punished for not admitting his
own mother.
The stone named Batu Malin Kundang
and it up to now and can be seen in the West
coast of Sumatera
