People often ask for the golden phrase, the silver bullet they can use to convince their teams, managers or executives to ‘go Agile’. While it would certainly help to talk about outcomes and benefits over practices and methods, it can sometimes be your own mindset that is holding back your ability to influence change.
In this session, Steph looks at mindsets (the values and assumptions you make) and explore how a lack of genuine curiosity can provoke defensive behaviours in others and stop organisations from resolving the issues that really matter, but are challenging to address.
She’ll use the setting of a small conversation to explore and better understand these ideas. While organisational change is big, the momentum for change can often be won or lost in small conversations. Becoming better in small conversations will help you grow your role in influencing organisational change. When you approach conversations with genuine curiosity about the other person’s point of view, you will not only have a more productive conversation, but build the trust needed for the work ahead.

- 1. MAKING YOUR CLASS BETTER! How to build your skills in Instructional Support
- 2. Today we will Talk about what you already know about Instructional Support. Explore the impact of these practices on your classroom. Provide examples and activities that will help you implement best practices. Develop a plan to use these practices in your classroom.
- 3. What do you know? What do you know about the CLASS assessment? What do you know about Concept Development? What do you know about Quality Feed Back? What do you know about Language Modeling?
- 4. Lets Brain Storm Think about a Learning Theme about Spring Take a minute to sketch out what that might look like in your classroom.
- 5. Concept Development Analysis and Reasoning Creating Integration Connections to the Real World
- 6. Brain Storm…… If your teaching team were planning a unit about Spring, how could you incorporate the practices of Analysis and Reasoning Integration Creating Real World Connections Into your daily activities? Write down your ideas….
- 8. Activity An Experience in Quality Feed Back Loops. Please pair up in groups of 3. Pick one person to be the observer and 2 “conversationalists” Watch example. Do exercise…1 person asks a question, the other answers…and so on. The observer counts the loops and answers the questions.
- 9. Questions How many loops (Back and Forth exchanges)? Did the conversationalists ask follow up questions? Were they persistent? Did you learn anything about either of the “conversationalists” from this exchange? Where there any clarifications or expansions in the conversation by either participant? Were they involved or just going trough the motions?

- Thank everyone for coming….House keeping. Please turn cell phones off…if it is necessary to check your phone during the training for an emergency please exit the room, so you can do so in private.
- Have the teachers look at these ideas record them on a group KWL chart.Discuss the class assessment and their knowledge of it and explain that the skills that they learn today will not only improve their scores on that tool but also benefit their classroom learning and social skills. Explain that Instructional support “highlights the distinction between learning facts and gaining usable knowledge-Learning how facts are interconnected” CLASS Manual Pre-KToday we will focus on the 3 areas of instructional support Concept Development, Quality Feed Back and Language Modeling.
- Read a Spring story Use prediction in reading the story… how do you think we are going to use this story today…what is it about? Ask participants to jot down some ideas…take about 5 minutes…They may do this in small groups if they would like
- Analysis and Reasoning- Suggestions Why and how questions, problem solving, predictions and experiemntationClassification/ comparison EvaluationsCreating Brainstorming planning producingIntegration connecting concepts integrates with previous knowledgeConnections to the real world- connects to students live, real world applications
- Encourage participants to go back to their notes and try to fit activities into these categories… or expand their ideas to meet the needs of the children through these practices.Write these notes on large chart paper.Discussion how is this working in your classroom already? How do you plan to incorporate more opportunities?Thinks about learned facts –vs.- usable knowledge.
