Goals & Objectives
• Goal: Highlight how today’s technologies interface with
existing career theories.
• Objectives:
– Present various technological tools that can enhance
career counseling through activities such as automated
assessments, real-time communication, and web-based
exploration.
– Provide a review of critical components of several career
development theories, such as Holland's RIASEC theory,
CIP, SCCT, Happenstance, and Life Design
– Demonstrate how these technological tools fit in the
context of these theories.

Overview of Dipity
Dipity is a free digital timeline website.
Users can create, share, embed and
collaborate on interactive, visually
engaging timelines that integrate
video, audio, images, text, links, social
media, location and timestamps.
Ethical Considerations
• Cost
• “On-ramp” time to learn the tool
• Confidentiality/privacy
• Client readiness to use
• Counselor competence
• How to integrate into counseling
Conclusion
• Most elements of career theories have at least
one potential corresponding technological tool.
• Many of these tools can be used across theories.
• Consider the context of each student/client,
his/her needs and preferences.
• Communicate benefits and challenges of
recommended tool(s) – how do they fit the need?
• Focusing on theory first can help you narrow the
list of relevant tools.
