- Alex Think of where you were last year, getting ready for your senior year in high school and where you are now. Your college experience will happen fast and before you know it you’ll be getting ready to graduate. So that’s why it’s important to MAKE COLLEGE COUNT
- Alex So, why are you here? Why are you going to spend all this time, effort and MONEY? Social, education, the “college experience”, mom, dad or both, to get a good job!
- Debbie Questioning/Contemplating Some of you my already know what direction your going, but some of you are still undecided or even questioning what major to choose. That’s okay too… We’re here to help Career Counseling and planning Regardless of where you’re at…. You can start The skill sets your building are going to apply to any field. Don’t let not knowing hold you back from making college count. There are still skills/experiences to learn Regardless of your career decision Let us help you along the way. Looking back to your parents time…(transition)
- Debbie The key here is the picture…. Make sure to focus them on the picture… the visual College to Career Transition 1950 to 1989 No experience necessary Tenure in 1st position: 4 to 5 years Companies did most of the training College to Career The Transition Since Early 1990s Experienced required Tenure in first position 12 to 24 months Most organizations provide little or no training Skills & expectations have soared (employers) The feeling of I can do this and I am excited to get started I will look for a complimentary first picture
- Debbie Just like Jimmy thought, all I need to do is go to class, earn my degree and that will be enough to land a job. A degree is not enough
- Alex The other thing we need to talk about is the job market, here are some of the things you should keep in mind: What jobs are in demand? What skills are in demand? What industries are growing? What regions are growing? For example, marketing – social media and digital marketing Having the right skills will make you competitive
- Debbie So a question we often get is, “what major should gets recruited most?” Do you have any guesses? All majors – The fact is if you’re an accounting, nursing, computer science major, there are those employers looking for you, but you are still going to have to build these skills in the current market place. It’s the professional skill set you build along side your major that is important.

- Alex Undergraduate research with faculty and working with NASA Service Learning – experience you gain through classroom assignments Volunteering at the Humane Society, American Heart Association, Boise Zoo Class projects Campus involvement – Student government, fraternities and sororities, clubs and organizations On-campus employment And of course internships – NASA, St. Luke’s, Micron, Boise Bicycle Project, Idaho Department of Commerce From our research-92% of employers expect students to have completed an internship

Boise being the capitol of Idaho with the State Capitol right down the street Health care - 3 hospitals Public Administration - Government Technical – HP, Micron and a variety of other excellent companies Business – Department of Commerce, Marketing, Management, Accounting and Finance and Communication A thriving art and music community – The Treefort event, the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, theaters Education – Local school districts Fabulous outdoor recreation opportunities from skiing, rafting, camping, golfing and just being outdoors A great resource is BRONCOJOBS

- Alex What does that mean? Well, starting out with a student job. Getting involved with clubs, intramurals, volunteering, sororities and fraternities and getting at least one internship is going to help you stand out and make you ready for the challenges you may face And help you stand out!
