MAINTAINING YOUR GENERAL HEALTH
INCLUDES ADDRESSING THE:
• mind,
• body,
• spiritual and social connections of who you are and
how you live.
 People make choices daily about their health
through both action and inaction.
 There are ways to maintain a healthy body. I will
address a few of these here.
1. EXCERCISE
•A few pounds of muscle mass (lean body mass) can
make a difference in how well someone recovers from
an infection.
•There are many reasons why exercise is good for us,
from helping muscles and bones remain strong to
improving the function of our heart and lungs.
2.DIET
• Your body needs nutrients in order to work properly
• How often and what do you typically eat in a day?
• Focus on wholesome and varied foods that nourish you and
meet your nutritional and calorie requirements.
WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF A HEALTHY DIET?
• A healthy diet must compose of foods from each of the five (5) food groups:
1. vegetables and legumes (beans)
2. fruit
3. grains and cereals
4. lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs, legumes (beans) tofu, nuts, seeds
5. milk, cheese, yoghurt or alternatives
3.MEDICAL CHECKUPS
• You probably see your doctor many times a year to monitor your health.
• This helps you stay up to date with vaccinations, physical exams and age-
appropriate screenings.
• Typically, a visit to your doctor must include the following check-ups:
Height, weight, blood pressure and temperature measurements.
A brief check-in, discussion and/or counselling about tobacco, alcohol, substance use,
diet, exercise and sexual practices.
4.MAINTENANCE OF BLOOD PRESSURE
• High blood pressure (hypertension) is a leading and highly
treatable cause of illness and death due to cardiovascular
disease.
• To maintain a healthy body, it is important that you have your
blood pressure checked at least yearly, or more frequent
checks if you are over 40 years of age, have a history of high
blood pressure, diabetes or any other risk factors for
cardiovascular disease.
5. MENTAL WELLBEING
• Your mental health and wellbeing is just as important as your
physical health.
• Being mentally healthy enables you to function well, have
meaningful social connections, positive self-esteem and being
able to cope with life's ups and downs.
• Keeping our mind healthy is an important part of our overall
health and wellbeing.
